These are pretty different in design, I have used the A1 extensively and other Fallknivens and many knives similar to the Rat 7 and many knives in Ontario's steel. The A1 is much stronger through the tip and body and has a much more secure grip, especially when lubricated. Fallkniven also grinds much thinner edges which do better in shallow cutting and are much easier to sharpen. I would tend to take the S1 over the A1 though and would see the A1 more as a really heavy utility knife.
@Ede 2: Interesting post, just what I was looking for. But you're basically saying: get both
If you could have only one of them which one would you choose?
@Cliff: How does 1095 compare to the laminated VG10?
At the moment the Rat7 is my favorite. the geometrie of the blade is more vertasile, is easy to resharp and it is strong enough for outdoor use, but for watersports (kanuing) the A1 will be the better joice.
But you can also get the rat7 in inox D2 steel.
So I think it also belongs which design you prefer, because both of them are very good knives.

1095 offers a high hardness and decent wear resistance, however not the way Ontario's hardens it (the hardness is in the embrittlement region) and their consistency is the worst I have seen. I would take Fallkniven's laminated VG-10 fairly easily, I have seen much better performance from Fallknivens than the Ontarios in regard to steel.
I realy like the Fallknivens and love my little F1, but if i had to shoose between the RAT 7 or A1, I would take the RAT 7. I used my RAT 7 very hard for over a year and it performed realy well. I only retired it when I got my swamp rat camp tramp, but I would still be happy to realy on the RAT 7 if I had to..
