Fällkniven A1 vs. Cold Steel SRK

No experience with the SRK, but plenty of hands on with Fallkniven.

So without comparing the two, this is a straight up vote for the A1.

I would choose the Fallkniven knives, no matter if the handle is too small or too large.
Why, you might ask. Just look at the advertising. Cold Steel sells their knives with youtube movies where they cut half a mile of cardboard and slash dead pigs. Wow, that must be a very useful knife if I can slash a dead pig with it.
The only ads I have seen for Fallkniven is pictures of knives with some misty forests in the background.

If you dont like the handle on your Fallkniven, just buy a blade and make your own. The difference in quality between FK and CS is so big it is worth the work.

Quality is not that different and yes I've owned both. They are both made in Japan, possibly in the same factory. The A1 has better steel and a more useful factory grind, but personally if my fingers cramp up trying to hold it, the best steel in the world doesn't help. Of course, the handle thing is a personal issue.

As for the CS advertising, that's not what matters to me in a knife. As far as that goes though, before Fallkniven started making knives, they were a Cold Steel distributor and obviously used CS knives as models for their own designs. The companies are historically linked together.

Fallknivens advertising actually bugs me more by plastering "Sweden" all over everything, when the knives are actually made in Asia.

Kiah,

Some good points made I had forgotten about. Fallkniven is a no frills company where Cold Steel is the opposite end of the spectrum. Fallkniven also takes care of their customers where I have had one issue with Cold Steel. One thing I will say about the being made in Japan. The main reason Fallkniven is made there is Peter (the owner of Fallkniven) believes VG-10 is the best overall stainless made. However VG-10 can only be used on knives made in Japan. Which is why VG-10 Spydercos are also made in Japan. Either way, they both make great knives, I believe Fallkniven is the finer instrument.

True. Though they do use other steels, I'm not sure about their exportability. I imagine VG-2 is restricted as well which would preclude their 3G blades from being made elsewhere. Either way, they have to be made somewhere as Fallkniven, like CS, is not set up to produce knives and merely acts as a brand name and importer.

I guess what bugs me most about them as far as advertising is the fact that they hide the "Japan" factor as much as they can get away with. They remind me of Mantis in that way. Not really fibbing, just not giving you the whole story. I can't find a single reference to Japan on Fallkniven's own site, though Sweden is prominent everywhere.

CS may have some silly advertising, but they don't try to hide CoO.
