Fällkniven Improvement Rant

The F1 was developed purely as a survival knife for the Sw AF. It later surfaced on the open market because people liked it so much. It has a high end steel and other features because it will be the ONLY knife you have if you have to eject from a JAS39 Gripen fighter jet somewhere over the big forests in Sweden.

Exactly. This is why one lives in my flight bag, and depending on terrain another is strapped to my calf.

JAS 39 =

the only improvement I can think of is a high quality carbon or alloy steel option like maybe Hitachi blue, Hitachi white laminated with stainless steel.

These scandinavian companies really like their laminated blades. I'm not a huge fan of the entire concept but they execute it well. I would have spent alot more money on fallkniven by now if they would offer a simple straight up high carbon blade like 15N20, 1095, 01, A2, etc.

The A1, S1, F1 models are some of my best knives, but as most things, they need some improvement.

The first thing i would change is the back of the handles, they are simply too square.

The second would be to tinker with the guards, the f1's tiny nub doesn't really do much good, and i would slightly decrease the acuteness of the handle-guard curve on all listed knives, making it more like a Scrapyard Regulator.

The third would be to get rid of the sharp corners on the handle right where the thumb is when put on top.

The fourth would be to slightly increase the size of the rear of the handle, to make it more like a Cold steel OSS.

The fifth would be to offer the whole sortiment in cheaper, more efficient steels.

Any Fällkniven employees taking notes?

The only thing I would change about the F1 is the handle....it is too small for me, .3 to .5 inch longer would be nice...

Honestly, the F1 is as close to a perfect knife as you can get.

I highly disagree with your proposed changes.

Keep in mind it is designed to be easily stowed in a flight suit/bdu's/emergency kit.

It is the perfect blend IMO of form and function. Don't mess with perfection.

Usually I would buy another virgin knife just to collect, and to fondle, and have a second as a user. The Fallkniven F1 is the only knife I own that is too perfect to buy a second one.

i certainly don't want Fallkniven to compromise on the quality of their steel.

heck, the whole damn reason i splashed out and bought Fallknivens was for the quality of their materials along with the nice, clean, functional designs.

+1

Honestly there's something about that knife that seems to break the laws of physics. It shouldn't be so damned capable being short, light, thin, stainless,... I could go on.

Any other knife and these would be deficiencies instead of qualities...

You can round the sharp corners with sandpaper/mousepad easily (if anyone haven't mentioned before).

I'm thinking about having a knife maker replicate the blade in 1095 with just a teeny weeny change to the guard, just for funzees>

After making leather for many fixed blades, production and custom.....the F1 is still my fav.......

You’re effectively suggesting Fällkniven should design a completely different knife. :-)

Different handle, different guard, different steel? That is a different knife you are describing!

Personally I believe the F1 is very well designed for a small, general purpose fixed blade.
