Hi all,

I've been looking at the pro series for a while now and the more I read about them, the more I doubt for which one I should go. I know that each knife serves a different purpose, so I guess my real concern is where will I be using it for. Well, everything I suppose but mainly chopping, batoning and some slicing. My question to you guys is, would the a1 pro be to much for these tasks (hiking-trips)?If so, the s1 pro might be to small to justify not buying the more convinient f1 pro. What are your thoughts about this serious mind wobbling dilemma ;),
Thanks in advance

If you're going to be mainly chopping and batoning, then go with the a1 pro for sure. And no, I don't think it's too much for a hiking trip for your intended use(s). If you don't want to have it ride on your hip/belt, then just strap it to the side of your pack. The sheaths on the pro series have extra lashing points on the sides to aid with this.

They're an excellent series of Fallknivens...I had an s1 pro for a bit. Good luck in your decision!

Hi and welcome! I have both the “old” A1 and the “old” F1 :).

I think like this: the A1 is a good, solid and proven camp knife. If your use will be mainly around wood processing (fire, shelter, etc.), I’d say go that, it’s almost a no-brainer. Chopping it’s maybe not really a field where it excel (it’s not properly a "chopper" :)) but for limbing branches and similar chopping tasks, it works fine. If you plan to regularly fell trees during your hikes though, prepare to spend some time and efforts and experience some disappointment :D. Nothing is impossible but there’s a right tool for each job. Batoning, if you ask me, it’s her playground, the blade shape and its convex edge allow me splitting sizeable logs with very little effort. Really, for me, the A1, with a good baton and proper technique, can work almost as a compact camping axe .

For me, since my use includes a good share of food prep, the A1 turns out to be a bit too much. Cleaning a trout, slicing soft bread, cutting bacon in thin slices, etc. is possible, but, for my taste and preference, I find the A1 somehow cumbersome in those tasks.

This is the reason why, since years now, I mostly carry the F1, when in the need of a fixed blade and the A1 is packed away and doesn’t see use really. I find the F1 does everything the big brother does, including batoning, but in a much easier way. Note my wood processing chores are limited to small, contained camp-fires and my “shelter building” is basically setting up a tarp in case of unexpected rain :). This mainly because I normally hike in rather regulated/protected areas where many things are ruled, from picking of wild edibles, to collection of wood and rocks, without mentioning the hunting and fishing. Not so much “into the wild” in my neck of the woods :)! The F1 is already a heck of a knife for these chores! Once coupled with a folding saw or a small axe, I am truly well set for my walks in the woods.

Whatever you chose I think you’ll be fine with Fallkniven ! The S1 I have never owned/tried/used. I think it’s a bit of both and, as all the compromises, it's a give and take. I haven’t really considered it because I think I will be short of the features I like either on the bigger A1 or the smaller F1; I understand for someone this can be instead a virtue :).

Good luck with your choice!

Don't have the pro, but I have the reg. A1. What strikes me is how much better it is at battoning when compared to let's say my BRKT Bushcrafter. The longer and thicker blade REALLY makes all the difference. If you're not happy with the cuting performance of the A1 then you can always reprofile the edge a bit to get a more aggressive edge.

Go A1(pro)!

I've been happy as a clam with all of my fallknivens over the years, and they were all the "old" bog standard series, so I don't see you ever being disappointed with the pro ones. F1 is still my go-to EDC at work and has been for the last 10 years or so and I have nothing but good things to say about them... even tried the Busse active duty for a while and it's done nothing but sit in a drawer after resharpening it and going back to the F1.

Thanks for all of your advice! Really great and helpfull forum. Might go for a A1 / kolt combo.
