has anyone tried fabric dye to dye you wood or bone for handles, and then finish them? If so tell me every thing on how it turned out.
vern

Folks I know use leather dye on their bone, not sure about wood, only dyed wood I've used has been from stabilizing outfits.

Yup,
You're better off using the leather dye. It's much simpler if it's alchohol base. I don't know about wood but the fabric dye did work on bone and antler. I used in the late 70's but .....what a messy proposition. Just follow package directions and wear crappy clothes and use RUBBER GLOVES. My hands were different shades of brown for about 2 weeks. The only benefit to it was that it came in or you could make just about every color of the rainbow. Good luck.

Bruce Evans had good luck coloring calf bone with Rite Dye. I've tried it to on new bone and it didn't work well. The bones Bruce used had been sitting out in the weather for quite awhile.

Ray,
Did you try to "simmer" the fresh bone for a few hours in the Ritz dye or just apply it?

Simmer for a few hours then turn the heat off and let soak overnight. Turn it back on the next day for a couple of hours and then coat with a mix of 1/3 ATF and 2/3 gasoline. Layer on newspaper for 3 weeks to let it set.

As far as bone is concerned, is it just me or has giraffe bone fell out of favor or what?

About simmering - the demo I saw on this at one of our meetings, Travis and others were using a slow cooker with the dye and bone in it and running it for several hours to overnight.

Clyde Fischer told me about dying bone in 2001 at Old Washington. He got the recipe from the guy at Case that does it.
