Fabrics: Nylon v. Duck

Seriously though, you are better off naked than in wet cotton.

And that is the key. Like all things, there is a time and a place for cotton. Hell, I even break the rules and wear denim jeans hunting sometimes. But, if you get wet in cotton, you are screwed. In general, being wet is bad, being wet and cold is worse, and being wet and cold in cotton kills.

It might have already been mentioned, but I'd use waxed canvas.

It depends on the kind of hunting you plan to do, but haevy waxed canvas will withstand briars and such far better than anything else.

If I had a buck for every hypothermic or pre hypothermic patient I had to cut their COTTON clothes off of and rewarm to keep them from going into shock I'd buy you a set of synthetic bush clothes.;)

I agree. The phrase we like to quote is cotton kills. Living here in the Pacific Northwest it is wet and cool most of the year. Don't get me wrong cotton has its place, just not in the woods during hunting season.

As far as building a bag, I have an lumbar pack I like. It has a single shoulder strap, so I use that rather than the waist belt, though it is available. Anything you want to put on your belt goes on your belt. If you need more gear, put it all in a larger bag, and then throw your little one in the top. More organization, and it is easy to ditch the larger bag and take the little one.
