FACE-OFF WITH DEATH

I have heard many times that most people when staring death in the face, are paralysed with fear.
Normal people have known to been rooted to the ground while a Grizzly slashes the poor guy to pieces, or thrashes around almost helplessly when his leg is being pulled by a crocodile into deeper muddier waters.
What I want to know is how does a person conquer the ultimate fear at that precise moment?
A calm disposition has been known to save many a life. I seek that elusive serenity. It is a kind of tranquillity of mind that is readily available to ordinary folk but most of them do not know how to go into that "zone", so to speak.
Has anybody ever experience such a state of mind, thereby saving his own life as well as others?
I am talking of conquering fear when you are a heartbeat away from death. It is such an act that delays your departure from this world unnecessarily.
If one is to survive under all desperate circumstances whether it is in the green jungle or the urban jungle, one will need that kind of presence of mind.
If there is even one man out there who has experienced that kind of feeling, let him speak up now, so that the rest of us cowards may live a few more lengthier years.

Golok - My take on it is "its in the training..." or "you play like you train." I think most people lock up in situations like that because they literally have no clue in the world how to react to the situation.

I am no brave soul or anything like that, but I have had a few close calls. In those situations I got the classic tunnel vison, impaired hearing, loss of fine motor skills and all of the rest of the symptoms of an adreneline dump into the system. My mind jumped back to how I was trained to handle those situations and I was able resolve those situations. Afterwards, I got the shakes and all that big time. I think that I might not have done so well if I hadn't been trained so well.

I've had the same experience. I've experianced tunnel vision several times. You end up having to move your head left-right to look for threats, etc. I don't think you can totally overcome the symptoms of adrenaline dump, you've just got to work around them. Just my take, Merry Christmas, Clayton.

A lot of it has to do with "tunnel vision" and your heart rate Once your heart rate reaches a certain level your performance begins to go down hill. When yor heartrate climbs you begin to loose your fine motor skills and eventually as it climbs even higher your ability to think clearly. Awareness and training are a big help.

I agree with the others; Training is the best way to overcome the problem. I haven't actually been attacked by a bear lately, but I have been in this situation before. Unless, you know what you are doing going slowly might be the best thing you can do. People can panic and do some very stupid things. The trick is to stay focused and take things at their simplest ... definitely one step at a time.

My experiences in combat, with a hundred or so different individuals (on our side), have led me to the following beliefs.

-About 10% are unable to cope with deadly situations and are useless to themselves and dangerous to others.

-The vast majority of folks have the capacity to cope. Their responses and reactions improve somewhat with training. However, by far the most improvement comes with actual experience not in training.

-The performance of some small percentage, say five percent, actually is enhanced by exposure to danger. They may not be serene but they are very effective.

-Individuals who have responsibility for others also in the situation are more likely to be able to perform under deadly pressure than those who do not.

To RgKeller and the rest of the guys,
Thanks for the tips and observations.
OK, it's back to the Boot Camp for some serious basics!
