i just scored a delta shopmaster SA180 off of a local facebook group for free! well... kindof... had to do some horsetrading... it's in good shape.. though the disk sander on the side is missing... i posted a WTB for an upright belt sander just to see what was out there... and another local guy said he had an old one and was willing to trade for it... all he was looking for was a bench vise... so i posted another feeler to see if i could come up with a bench vise... wanted to trade an old broken dirtbike for it... had a guy who wanted to buy the bike... so i just sold it... then had another guy who offered to just give me an old 6" vise... a little rusty and missing a bolt or two... but free nonethe less... so i cleaned it up... replace a couple bolts... and traded it to the first guy today for the sander... and he said there's a local abrasives dealer that has all the belts i could ever want for it... hoping this is at least a good starter grinder... i'll be more than likely building my own 2" x 72" grinder when i re-organise my garage... (it's pitiful enough that calling it a shop would be insulting shop's everywhere... lol...) anyone have any tips for starting out??? it's 1" x 42" and it does have a small platen... so i'll probably look at building a longer platen so i can use more of the belt... and possibly put in a curved platen... but it runs straight and smooth and just needs a bit of cleaning... so i'm stoked... lol...

That's a nice bit of wheelin' and dealin' you did there! One recommendation that I hope you take to heart is to get yourself some good belts. Ceramics for hogging, Trizact CF's for finish work, AO JFlex for handles and plunges and maybe a low grit Cubic Zirconia for hogging handle material.

Cheers

thanks for the tip... heard alot of guys saying that the ceramic belts just cant be beat... even if they're expensive... they'll keep cutting even after the same value of zirc belts are completely worn out... A&H abrasives (woodworkers supply) is based out of casper wyoming... i knew they were great for woodworking stuff... but didn't think they'd have much for metalworking... but i guess you gotta sharpen tools too... lol...

okay... looking at prices... these belts in ceramic are only $4.00 each... that's not that bad... i was expecting $10-12 each... lol...

Well, they are $10-12 for a 2"x72" belt but they are worth every single penny! If I was you I'd get a 36 grit ceramic for profiling, a few 80's for bevels, a couple each in Trizact CF A160, A65 and A45, a few 120's, 220's, and 320's in JFlex and a couple 60 or 80 CZ's. I've been using the 3M belts but the Norton's are also liked around here, it's mainly a personal preference thing. There are lots of different brands and you really just have to play around to find what works for you.

One other thing, you oughta see about getting that disk replaced, a disk sander is soooo handy in a knife shop.

yeah... i'm putting together parts to make a 2x72, an etching unit, and i'm going to get my torch bottles refilled so i can do some torchwork and heat treating... might try to take a 33 gallon drum and make a mini forge/oven... 90% of this is stuff i can do myself... especially with the info posted on here... this really is a great site... thanks guys...
