I guess I am the odd man here since I freehand sharpen on Spyderco ceramic bench stones. I seem able to get a sharp edge, at least it is to me liking. I do press fairly hard using the brown stone when I let the edge get pretty dull. I try to strop often but sometimes I am just too lazy and just blow it off.
Sharpening a knife is just one of those knife ownership rituals.
I don't know about brown stones - never seen one. I do OK sharpening S30 and S35 on my Sharpmaker's grey triangular rods (using the pointy edges of the rods) and the following up on the white rods (using the pointy edges as well). The flats work OK on the grey rods, but not so well on the white rods. Go figure. It's pretty tough steel to sharpen if you use them a lot and let them go too long between sharpenings.
