I've noticed that Spyderco knives with liners come from the factory with a small amount of lubricant. The knives with no liners come with out a lubricant. Is this correct? What kind of lubricant is used at the factory?
Thanks in advance.

The lube being sold at the factory's store is called Militec-1. It describes itself as a "Synthetic Metal Conditioner". Originally developed for firearms, it requires heat to penetrate & bond, so the directions say to fire the weapon, then apply. For blades, I suggest a thorough Simple Green soak, then hair-dryer dry, then apply a drop or two to the pivot pin. Then crank up the hair dryer again. Pretty cool stuff. It costs $1523 bucks a gallon, but fortunately, it's sold in 1/2 ounce servings for like $6.

They may sell it at the store, but I don't think it's the default lubricant they use on their knives.

Militec has a very distinct smell, and I've never smelled it on any of my knives.

Benchmade is the one that uses Miltec, at least they used to. Not sure anymore, havent bought a Benchmade in a while  I believe I read on the Spyderco forums once that Spyderco uses Ballistol on their knives.

I flip balisongs quite a bit and must say that this is the lube of choice for most flippers. It's great stuff. Email the company and ask for a sample and include your mailing address. They will be more then glad to send you a .5 oz tube of it. That will be more then enough to last you a year or more depending on how often you use it. I myself have only felt the need to use it 3 times so far.
