Fail-proof Fire Starters !!!

Ok I know that nothing is fail-proof but since my recent struggles to get fires started on some recent hikes I have been searching for the most fool proof methods that I could get in my kit.
It's great to know you can start a fire with ferro-rods and maybe even bow and drills but in a real survival scenario you might need a fire as quick as possible and if you have the means to do that then all's well and good !

Anyway I came across some outdoor firelighters made by ZIP and decided to give these a try. I thought that a good testing ground would be my local beach as there is always a strong wind coming off the sea.....

I came across many animal tracks again but still no sign of Otter, these all looked like Raccoon.....

I followed them for a while....

Anyway back to the purpose of the thread, these are what they look like.....

You just use them like a giant match and strike them on the side of the box ( I have cut out the striking pad and taped it onto the inside of my PSK lid ).
It struck straight away and was so hot it burned my finger ends, I added some tinder and it was away no problem and didn't seem affected by the wind at all !!!
As a side note if you were foolish enough to light these before you had any tinder ready they do burn for quite a time and would allow you to run round like a headless chicken gathering tinder !!!

Even though quite large I have managed to fit 2 into my pocket PSK, so if the ferro rod, BIC and matches all fail I know I will still be staying warm that night !!!!;)

Those things are pretty sweet. Coghlans and Diamond also make similar products that work pretty well. I am a big fan of the wax/sawdust firestarters due to their ease of use, light weight, and effectiveness.

Has Maisy been taught by Master Chiun? I could swear it looks like she's floating!
:D

Chiun can start fires just by tapping on wood with his fingernails....

Sinaju rules! I think I read 85 of the series. Never got tired of them!

A Zippo lighter and a can of lighter fluid is pretty foolproof. Not quite the mountain man feeling of flint and steel, but when you are cold.....
