Failed Miserably At Starting Fire !!!

lol, i wouldn't want to use my drinking liquor to help start a fire. as far as i'm concerned, that's alcohol abuse!

but yeah, don't drink methanol or ethanol. that stuff will seriously f you up.

That's how I felt too, heheh. But at that point, 5 ounces of booze wasn't worth freezing over. (Ethanol is ethyl alcohol, by the way, which is booze)

You needed a fire starter that lights under water. Check out calcium carbide. Drop a few pieces in a puddle and it releases acetelyne gas bubbles. It is easy to ignite and burns fairly hot. You do have to keep it dry until you are ready to use it though.

First thing first.
Gather wood so you don't have to move around.
Cover your fire site with something (poncho, sleeping mat, your body...)
Then once fire site is somehow preserved from rain, try starting fire.

Hey Pit,

Like I said yesterday, the rain seemed like a good time to try an "emergency" firestarting method because as you noted, it's good to test these things out in real life scenarios. With the input from the other members and the knowledge gleaned from sitting in the damned rain, I bet you could make it work in another downpour if you had to.

I still thinks it's a good idea and thanks for sharing it, the pics and the experience. Now let's see how it works in the back yard, yeah?

Well the rains still coming, who said downpours don't last long, so might gear up and try the fire thing again !!!
