fairly dumb question

I wanted to get a knife so I asked my shooting buddy. He said get the BM 710SBT. Santa was nice enough to bring the knife. I may be easy to please since I'm extremely new to knives, but it seems like a fantastic knife. Here's my dumb question. How do I hold it? The position of my fingers seems natural, but where is my thumb suppossed to go? I assume there's different schools of thought on this. Perhaps there is a web page with pics or somebody here with too much time and a digital camera??? I really need some info for the beginner of proper knife techniques.
Thanks,
Satch

SteveSatch,
Welcome to the forums, I think that you will find that most here regard no question as being a dumb one.

My personal opinion on your qusetion varies from knife to knife, but for my 710 I usually grip it behind the axis lock on the serrations in the handle. I find this method to work well for cutting and piercing, since it gives a good firm grasp to keep your hand from sliding forward on the handle. It worked quite well on the Christmas wrapping and boxes that I needed to open. If I'm using the knife for leverage, for instance cutting a thick zip tie. I find that placing my thumb just above my index finger seems to work quite well, giving me the leverage I need.

Welcome to the best forum around! One bit of advise when using an axis lock .. Keep your fingers and the meat of your hand away from the locking bar when in use.

PS ... No questions are dumb, but don't count on the answers you may get...LMAO.

Sorry Satch, the only dumb question is the unasked one!

I don't know the occasional question "how many people really carry knives?" is kinda stupid but not this one. Just use whatever feels natural to you and it'll work.
Have fun and welcome to the best place on earth.

Steve,

Sorry buddy, but that IS a dumb question!.

(You hold that knife the same way that you would hold anything else in your hand..., with your fingers [AND thumb!] wrapped-around it so it WON'T fall out of your hand!.

glockman99, you left out an important detail: Steve, wrap your fingers around the handle, not the blade -- it hurts less that way.

Glockman, if you read my post properly you would have noticed I didn't ask where to put my fingers. I asked where to place my thumb.

maybe you should get a plastic knife so you won't cut yourself now go back and read you post and see how stupid it really sounds

Steve:
I think it is a valid question!

Guys; lets remember there are major knife publications which, on a monthly basis, answer these kind of questions and others about knife tactics.

I welcome you Steve. Look around at the other threads on this forum and you will see that we really are better than some of the replies you have recieved here. Welcome to the family and the forum.

The BEST REAL answer to your question is to hold your knife the way that feels the most secure, and most comfortable to YOU.

I would be willing to bet that what Satch is getting at is that the peak of the thumb ramp seems to be in the wrong place if you hold the knife in the over popularized "saber" grip. The answer might be that the knife was never designed to be held that way in my opinion. It seems to me that the "thumb ramp" is in the wrong place on nine out of ten knives that employ them. It is not very courteous to give Satch a hard time just because he was not sure how to phrase his question.

To me, the 710 appears designed for the hammer grip. For better control during hard push-cutting, I choke up on the handle and place my thumb on the blade spine. A saber-like fighting grip can be employed on the 710, but I place the butt of the handle in the cup of my palm for that. It provides a better coupling of force, and the thumb sits on the handle right about where the traction teeth in the liners are located. Still a rather dubious grip. I second what some one said earlier, just grab the knife as seems natural, and you should be fine. Oh, and just forget about the saber grip. You won't need it.
