faith in humanity

I'll go on a bit.... I self-identify as a Humanist. I generally believe in humanity...That we have the ability to order our own society and to control our destiny. That the vast majority of people are decent folks and that the ones that are not tend to get all the attention...

However, that being said, it does get difficult at times. As a police officer, I'm inordinately in touch with the "evil that men do"....We do so tend to see humanity at it's worst. It's hard at times to remember that these folks represent a very small minority of humans and that most of 'em live decent lives, just trying to get along.
One of the things that I find continually disappointing is the pervasive nature of superstition, irrationality, and magical thinking.
They are convicting people of witchcraft not only in undeveloped Africa but in highly-developed countries in the Middle East.
Millions of people read horoscopes with rapt attention each day. Phony "psychics" and "readers" and "healers" rake in billions of dollars every year from the gullible and the ignorant.
I could go on for some time in that regard, but the gist is that humans are to a great degree limited by our genetic heritage which shapes our brains the same way our primitive ancestor's were shaped.
These things worked well for little bands of hunter-gatherers living 50,000 years ago.... Not so much today.
The only cure.....Education. And it's in short supply.

Humanity has become a disconnect from nature and from themselves as humans. No doubt will soon win the Darwin award and it will not be pretty.

Something related; it isn't always "to see is to believe" but the other way around.

It's what you CHOOSE to believe in first. Half empty or half full, it's what you choose and what you become.

Aldous Huxley, "Ape and Essence"

The leech's kiss,
The squid's embrace,
The prurient ape's defiling touch.
And do you love the human race? No, not much.
