Fakahatchee Strand, FL Everglades

PorcupineMtns66: We were concerned about possibly stepping on one, but surprisingly, never saw not even one. Perhaps because the water in the slough was so cold, they were sunning themselves elsewhere, who knows... As for the hammock idea, that is probably the only way to go *if* you *had* to spend the night in that. I wouldn't want to.

Brians: Doing a vigorous 5 miles in chest waders would've killed me personally due to the extra weight, and non-breathable properties. Perhaps there are other ones that are light weight. The ones that I used to wear for surf casting and trout fishing were like a car tire. Everyone had on water shoes that drained very well with a decent sock. Worked pretty good.

Thanks for the nice comments on the photos. The ones towards the end are better, IMO. The orchids, with the exception of the yellow ones were not in bloom. The bromeliads weren't either, but looked cool to me either way. :)

I don't think you could get me to wade into chest deep swamp water that may or may not be full of huge gators. To me that's just crazyness. O.K., I would maybe do it if I were at the back of the line, maybe...

I did a hike in there about 5 years ago with the Florida Native Plant Society, it was really something. Would love to go back.

Awesome photos Chris! Sometimes I really miss southern Florida, you're not helping that any.

The first trip to the Everglades was about thirty years ago and many more were to follow. It is a most awesome and magical place that is very hard to describe to someone who has never been there. You guys are very lucky to live so close by.

BTW, a really really excellent non-fiction book about the history and nature of this area is called "Sea of Grass" by Marjorie Stoneham Douglas. Everything from the Indians to the Spanish to the Pirates to the Poachers and everything else; you will really more appreciate the Everglades after reading it.

That one is on my bookshelf, but I haven't gotten to it yet. "Totch: A Life in the Everglades", "The Swamp: The Everglades, Florida, and the Politics of Paradise" and "A Land Remembered" are all good reads.

Nice pics, brings back some memories, I grew up in south Miami, (Cutler Ridge and then Homestead), spent many a weekend camping in the glades with the Boy Scouts.

Great photos!

Looks like my kind of hiking. I am in the Tampa area and have several good areas to explore if anyone is interested.

When I was living in Miami, I hiked part of the Fakahatchee twice. I did not cover even 5 miles.
I don't believe it was as wet back around 2003, but it was a difficult, although beautiful hike.
