Post Falls, Idaho seller, many of you know, who claims that it is a fake.

Who has one for comparison photos?

Depending on the price, if it is way less than it should be, probably Chinese made. Wallyworld has them, Buck, Kershaw etc.

If you were going to bet your life on the answer, how would you rule, counterfeit or real?

Did you check out the thread I linked? Someone bought the same knife off eBay and it was fake. Looks a lot like yours.

Linked removed per forum rules on linking a seller without BladeForum certification. 300Bucks

This one did not go immediately into the Fake/Counterfeit and Americans Who Sell Them sticky because the seller is a neighbor of Buck Knives, Inc. in Post Falls, Idaho and this gave me pause.

Can anyone think of a reason that this knife and the seller's location and closed auction link should not go into the sticky thread?

I find it odd that he would actually list that item, disturbing in a way, and yet nothing was mis represented...just leaves me feeling a bit " off" seeing this...especially the last sentence of the description!

They know each other.

Is this a joke? Is it Joe's Birthday?

To me, IMHO, it fits the sticky thread on fakes/counterfeits because it is a fake and an American is selling it.

I find it sad in a big way. I have bought Bucks from this guy and he sells a lot of Buck knives. I thought he was a Buck dealer as he is often selling real Buck stuff no one else has. Buck should cut their ties with this guy for selling fake buck knives. He is also buying up a lot of the good knives on the auction sites and reselling them at 2x the price :thumbdn:.

My question to the seller:

Me: "What detail(s) give it away as a fake/counterfeit Buck? Thank you."

Seller's answer: "Hello,

The first and primary reason is that Buck did not ever make a knife like this one, and not even a model 855 in black. About 12 years ago Buck moved some of its production to China, and these counterfeits have hurt Buck's reputation. This is part of the reason that all Buck Knives will be made in Post Falls Idaho within 4 more years. Right now only about 10% are still made there.

Thanks for the question, and good luck with all of your knife ventures."

I think he should be added to the sticky. He attempted to sell a fake Buck. Whether or not he acknowledges its a fake doesn't matter.

I've been a customer of that seller for a long time and the listing shocked me. I just had to let them know how I felt about it, so I sent them the following message:

I won't say that I'm one of your best customers , but I have bought from you quite a few times in the past. I have always found you to be one of the superior sellers of Buck knives on eBay, but my opinion may change after seeing this listing.

I find it hard to see how you could justify selling a known counterfeit Buck, especially given the fact that at that price, the profit for you would be tiny.
Isn't your reputation worth more to you than that?

I'm very disappointed in you, for whatever that's worth.

Here's the reply I just received. I think the guy is sincere and I doubt that he will list any more fakes.

Dear David,

Thanks for the email. I understand what you mean, and I am sorry about offending you. From the listing my intentions should have been rather clear. It was just a small way to educate even a few unaware ebayers that nearly all the "Buck" knives coming from China are fakes. I did get an email from someone asking why it was a fake, so at least one person learned from it. If I had tried to sell it as authentic, then yes, I would have been a liar just like the rest of them. I wasn't out to make a profit, which was clear. I was making a statement. Also, a knife is a knife, and even if it is a fake, and someone will find a use for it. So I meant to expose the fake Buck industry, and also to basically give the knife away to someone who can use it. I hope this explains clearly enough why I listed it. BTW, I don't have any other counterfeits.

On the other hand, your point is a very good one and as usual, I have learned a good lesson from a very serious knife collector. I appreciate your comments. Thanks for the email. I hope we can get through this issue and still be friends.

Kindest Regards, Jacob

Interesting thread.

It has made me think about what I would do if I ended up with a fake Buck knife. I certainly would NOT resell it if it was a fake.

I decided if it looked to be an obvious fake that I would send it to Buck with a short note about how I came to own it. I would ask for verification and send a check to cover postage back to me in case it was real. Maybe get a short letter stating it was a real Buck.

If it was a fake, Buck could do with it as they wish. I would not want it back. I would be willing to supply any information I could about who I bought it from in case they wanted to pursue a counterfeiter or a counterfeit seller.

I try to make sure of my purchases before money changes hands. I check feedback, location and pictures out closely. I don't make the purchase if I have any doubt at all. I feel I have been lucky so far.

I have bought knives from this seller too. I would still buy from him after his answer to Plumberdv, but I would not make another purchase from him if I saw he was selling fake Bucks again. We all make mistakes and hopefully we all learn from them.
