I purchased a knife off of fleabay that was represented as true damascus from a builder in Oregon. There is a bare spot about a quarter inch long, like it was a coating that didn't take. I don't see an upload option for pics or I would post one. Anyway I've been enjoying the site and learning since joining.

I use photo bucket to upload pics. You have to use a file sharing site like that to upload. Theres others but I already had an account.

Mike, you can upload to tinypic.com or photobucket.com and link it to the site. The other choice is to purchase a membership to the forum.

By the way, the bare spot, is it at one of the ends? I ask because damascus does not show a heavy contrast pattern after forging and grinding. It isn't until it has been etched in an acid solution that it shows deep contrast. The majority of the damascus that I have dealt with has had an end unetched.

Looks to me like real damascus. That spot looks almost like a grinder mark after etching or a spot of weld that didnt get cleaned up properly. However I could be wrong.

I think ,you got a bit carried away thinking it was not Damascus. It sure looks like it. What would this "applied" process be? If you wrote to the maker and complained, perhaps you can write him again and apologize. I personally don't care for that "line" type but I see it being repeated by several smiths. Frank

I would say it is either a small weld inclusion that etched differently than the rest, or it may have been a spot on the blade that was either sanded when doing the handle, or may have been a small spot that was dirty or didn't take the etch the same for some reason. I see nothing that leads me to believe this would be "fake" Damascus.

Thanks to all that replied . It makes sense that either that area didnt take etching or was buffed/sanded off. The etching on the blade is much lighter overall than one I have from Alabama Damascus .

That looks a bold stripe pattern. It is made by layering a thicker piece of carbon steel - thin nickel - thin carbon steel - thin nickel - repeat.

As said, the bare spot is just a rub off. You can touch it up with some vinegar or bluing.

Thanks, straight vinegar?
