Fake Delica 4 FFG?

Seems like most everyone agrees it is genuine. Now I'm with TravisH...why the patina? It doesn't bother me so I'm not going to put a lot of effort into trying to get it off. I just thought VG-10 was supposed to be one of the most stain resistant steels out there.

I buy a lot of knives off amazon and haven't had any issues
I have two blue Delica's from amazon just like yours and they look the same

I get most of my knives and multi-tools from Amazon (Canada), I've had good luck with them so far. My Spydero Delica 4 FFG (gray) will be here in a couple days.

The box was sealed with a clear sticker on either end
That never happens with Spyderco, they never ship anything with seal sticker on the box, the bubble bag or plastic bag is taped with knife in it.
Unless the vendor put them on but I don't see how they would go through the trouble

Never say never. I have boxes that had the small circle seal sticker on them. Also quite a variety of different bags inside...

Exactly. Haven't seen one in a good while, but I received more than a few Spyderco boxes with those clear stickers from New Graham a few years ago. Over the years, the only thing that's ever been consistent about Spyderco packaging has been its inconsistency. Even two knives produced weeks apart will sometime have packaging differences, and knives can sometimes on Spyderco's, a distributors, or a dealer's shelves for years.

One question I have also which I forgot to address was the sharp thumb hole on my delica. It actually cut skin on my thumb every time I opened it. It sounds very similar to your knife but I wonder, is this normal?

I have since remedied it with some sandpaper and metal polish, but would rather not have to do that for every delica/endura I buy in the future.

Edited to add: the delica I have is extremely roughly machined inside the thumb hole. No other spyderco I've handled or owned has been like this.

I personally have never had a problem with the sharpness of the thumb holes cutting me, but I have read others' having experiences similar to yours. I believe they are left that way purposely for better purchase for the thumb. I think they are all like that. I have some Benchmades with thumb holes, and the edges are chamfered (is that the right word?) and they aren't quite as easy to open as my Spydercos.

The inside of the thumb hole on my Delica 4 FFG was also left roughly machined. It's also the only Spydie I have like that. I'm thinking that maybe somebody at G. Sakai possibly forgot to finish the insides of the opening holes on a batch/batches of blades(?). Nevertheless, I've never had any special problems with the knife due to the unrefined Spyderhole; not even corrosion (yet). :)

No idea why so many people buy from Amazon when there are so many legit dealers that have great prices.

Looks legit to me.

Hmm not sure about that. My Delica is pretty sharp as well as my Dragonfly, but they don't cut skin. My Sage is sharper than both of those, but even it doesn't cut skin.

I like the sharpness of the hole. Makes it easier to open. But to each his own.

Partly because of free 2-day shipping w/prime, but mostly because their pricing and return policy is 2nd to none. I initiated a return for this Delica on Friday and will have a replacement at my door by Monday. No questions asked. And I have 15 days to return the original, so I can compare them side by side.

The only other dealer I found that has a comparable price is KnifeWorks, and their return policy isn't even worthy to be compared. If there's a dealer with the same return policy and comparable pricing then by all means let me know. I would def be willing to check them out!

Hi David,

I don't live in the States, buying from Amazon Canada is so much cheaper than buying from anywhere else. Buying from Canadian dealers is expensive, you'll pay full MSRP, or more. When buying from Amazon Canada, I can pay a small amount of money to have it shipped to my door in a couple days, returns are easy as pie. If buying from the U.S. it normally takes three weeks to arrive, and there may or may not be an import charge when it shows up at your door. Your item will sit at customs for days, until it's cleared.

I would buy directly from Spyderco if it didn't cost me $20.00US to ship it out to me. That's on top of the tax charge, and there may also be a hidden import fee to boot!.:(:grumpy::mad:

I've been buying from KW for 10 years now and I've probably only had to return something 3 times in 10 years. I prefer to deal with them simply because I know what they sell is 100% legit.

That is understandable. Good point.

I had a bad experience with KW the first time I purchased from them. Bought a Ritter Grip and the SS liners wiggled inside the scales. Sent it back with a detailed description of the problem (at their request) so they didn't send another one with the same issue. It took almost two weeks for them to send a replacement. They kept telling me they would send it out on X day and email me with a tracking number. Well X day would pass and nothing. So I'd call and they'd promise to send it on Y day. Same story. They finally sent it out, but when I got the replacement it had the exact same issue. I had to send it to Benchmade to get it right (they did a great job btw). I explained my frustration to Mariah, who seemed quite indifferent about it, and asked her to pass my comments along to the owner, Roger. Either she didn't pass them along or he didn't take the time to respond, because I never heard anything back.

So I'd rather take a chance with Amazon because 99% of the time it's probably going to be authentic when shipped from and sold by them. If I hit that unlucky 1% then it gets fixed in 2 business days with no questions asked. And they don't have an attitude about it either.

Amazon is supposed to be a legit dealer, unless it was not through Amazon directly.

My problem with Amazon is that I've never gotten a definitive answer to the question of whether Amazon's own stock is segregated from, or commingled with, that of "fulfillment by Amazon" third party vendors.

And thanks to that "no questions asked" return policy, you have to wonder if everything that is returned to them gets shipped back to the manufacturer, destroyed, or just put back in the system and shipped out to the next sucker looking for the best price. There is nothing to stop the unscrupulous from buying fakes from China, then buying the real thing from Amazon, putting their fake in the real box and returning it to Amazon.

True, Jack. Of course that's a potential problem with any dealer that accepts items for return that were not defective, damaged, or shipped in error and does not have a brand-specific expert on staff to inspect them before they're returned to stock.

Even after I sanded the hole down a bit and used metal polish on it, it has good purchase on my thumb and is still sharper than any spyderco I've had and any I've handled. I'm more of a function over form kinda guy, and I appreciate the good purchase on the thumb hole, but it was sharper than it needed to be at first for sure.

Hmm not sure about that. My Delica is pretty sharp as well as my Dragonfly, but they don't cut skin. My Sage is sharper than both of those, but even it doesn't cut skin.

Read above. I like it also, because I don't want my thumb to slip off while opening, but cutting my thumb everytime is a little much. If it wasn't cutting the skin off, I would have left it alone.

And all this is not to say I don't like the knife--I love it. It's a great knife and functions perfectly for what I bought it for; I was just noting that I had similar issues with rough edges like the OP.

Additionally, I understand at this price point a knife will not be perfect, but I guess I got the answer to my question about the issue--it's normal.

Thanks. Do you use yours for food prep?

Maybe a late post but wanted to mention some potatoes stain the heck out of blades and some do not......might even depend on match of potato chemistry to blade steel, but my personal observation is small red potatoes are far worse than big ol' idaho types...

AND mine was stiff and pivot loosening did not help much, AND mine has a rougher hole than i recalled (probably incorrectly as i remember how pleased i was in comparison with the first Benchmade AFCK compared to my Gen 1 Clipit Delica).

AND mine has slicked up quite a bit in several weeks and dry teflon bike chain lube did help, AND none of it now is noticed at all, AND do NOT take the thing apart lest the inconsistent hardware bug bite you with many problems of stripped heads and threads as sometimes happens playing with hardware Sakai contracts out.
