Fake Griptilian?

I just received a new shipment of Benchmades in today. I specifically checked my 550SHG models and all of them are now marked like the one you purchased. Benchmade has changed the marking location.

Mystery solved.

I've read through this thread since I have a few mini grips, and have moved out a few and hadn't seen this marking either, so I was interested.

But I guess my question for the OP would be, why didn't you just ask Benchmade? Then post your thread as informational.

Dunno....just sayin' :)

The custom knife from Benchmade stamps steel on that location (Mine is 550SG in S30V) I believe it is legid one.

I'm not sure about that. Both these are BM custom shop blades. Albeit from a couple years ago. I'm more inclined to think the one poster who advised that BM has updated their blade markings and packaging is more accurate. But I could be wrong. Often the case. I think it's probably legit but the OP will never know with complete certainty unless he checks with BM, or sees the exact same markings being sold through authorized dealers.

It's not fake. The new benchmades are shipping with that darker print. The box is even different now.

FWIW, I noticed that the laser markings on some CRKT models as well as other makes also differ in placement on the blade, between original versions of the same model. I wouldn't be surprised if your Benchmade is indeed the Real McCoy...

Thanks for the follow up. I really appreciate it.

I don't buy knives on Amazon. With the exception of authorized dealers, which is the safest way to buy any brand of knife, you do stand some risk of getting fakes there or on ebay.
The fake knife business has grown to the point where you really need to know your products, and even then it is possible to end up with a fake...

Checked out that seller on eBay and the prices on Grips were the same as from well known Benchmade dealers. Even if it was just a little less not worth it for me.

Only time I go to eBay is as a last resort when looking for a disco'd model. I will never buy a Spyderco on eBay though as the amount of blatant fakes on there is ridiculous, even from sellers with positive reviews.

100% agree. I buy and sell a lot on ebay but one thing I try not to buy there are knives unless it's from an authorized dealer and even then the little bit of savings isn't worth not being able to handle the specific knife I will be paying for prior to payment. Like you said, I really only have purchased harder to find discontinued models on ebay, specifically just a 755 MPR recently.

To the OP, I bought two brand new Benchmade over the weekend, a 484-1 and 9052 and they both came in the new style box but the steel stamp is in the "normal" spot on both knives. It seems the color is much darker and bolder on yours too. I'd be pretty suspicious myself but who knows...
I do know that guys from Benchmade are on the Benchmade forum and regularly pop on and answer questions, maybe that would be your best bet to find a legit answer.

Good luck
Cory

That's legit. I've gotten two directly from Benchmade with the steel lasermarking in the same location as yours. You'd know for sure if it was fake...

I got my Mini Grip on Amazon and I'm afraid it's a fake. The butterfly logo and the Mel Pardue logo have already started to fade significantly and I've only had the knife for a couple of months.
