I just received the Spyderco Cat from BladeHQ.com (http://www.bladehq.com/item--Spyderco-Cat-G-10-Folding-Knife--9118)
It just looks like a fake. The wire looks off and also the cat has jimping? Is it a fake?

Welcome to bladeforums.
There are some fake spydercos floating around, so you're wise to watch out for them.
The best way to avoid fakes is to only buy from reputable dealers.

BladeHQ for example.

You might get a dud that slipped through QC once in a blue moon, but no way would an upstanding dealer like them sell a fake.

I don't think so, looks legit to me....and yes the cat has jimping.

Welcome to the forums by the way!!

Thanks. This is actually my second cat. I bought another one from bladehq as a spare. My first cat doesn't have jimping and the wire clip is different. The wire clip on my 1st cat goes flat at the end while this new cat's wire remains angled up. The G10 also felt different on the newer knife from bladehq. My first cat looks like http://www.spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=669

Is there a reason why they are different?

I also looked up previous threads on bladeforums and the biggest complaint about the G10 cat is that it doesn't have jimping.

WOW!

Here is a quick story. I loved the Cat. Didn't mind the 440C or G10, actually preferred the G10 over the Carbon Fiber variety. My only issue was the new Cat didn't have jimping. The old CF Cat had jimping, but not the new G10 version. So I jumped through 100 hoops spent boat loads of money and got an S30V Cat and replaced the CF with the G10.

Now a year or so later I discover Spyderco (unless this is a fake) has added jimping.

Assuming the jimping is new to the Cat, it looks real otherwise.

EDIT: Just noticed the wire clip is retarded too. Not necessarily in a bad way though. If it is a fake, I MUCH prefer it over the other style.

It's legit, came direct from Spyderco within the last week or two. If you are not satisfied with the knife, you are welcome to return it.

I don't have that version to compare to but I'm sure that the jimping is CQI. Also what looks off with the clip?

That's funny. I've been stalking ebay hoping to find a CF cat.

Here's a pic to compare my first cat(bottom) to the new cat (top)

Some advice on the CF Cat. They are junk. Even the non factory second CF versions are junk. This is compared to the G10 version.
Here was my G10 S30V Frankenstein.

Here are the etch differences. The Taiwan and S30V etches are crooked. The top one is the 440C version. The bottom is the CF version.

Here is a notch they put in the blade to denote a factory second. I bought the factory second first (not caring about the scale flaws), but the screwed up the otherwise good blade with the notch. This forced me to hunt for a non-factory second version. I paid a lot for it and the CF scales were still poor (not horrible like the factory second) and the etching was still crooked.

Here is the CF scale on the factory second. Where the cut out is for the spydie hole, the CF is pitted and terrible. The QC version was less pitted, but still FAR below Spyderco quality.

When I was finally done messing with it I added Cocobolo scales. Pics with my modded Persistence.

Looks like I got to rethink on the CF cat... the Sage 1 is bigger than I'd like, but is smoother. Will you be getting the new cat?

Probably not, but I think its a clear improvement. I've moved on to customs. The Cat was always my favorite Spyderco. I tried the Sage, but I didn't like the CF and it was bigger than I wanted. Then I tried the PM2 (way too big), Dragonfly (too small, hard to open), and finally the Native 5 (hate lock backs, but wow what a looker). I only have the Dodo, Persistence, and Cat now. My EDC is my custom Alan Davis.

Do you not like this new model? If they made it a year ago, it would have saved me a lot of hassle. It's affordable, the PERFECT size, decent steel, wire clip. The only thing that eventually bothered me was it was kind of uncomfortable when trying to cut through hard stuff. The narrow handle would dig into my hand.

Hi Sleeprl,

Welcome to the Spyderco forum.

The Cat & Chicago models have gone through a number of changes since we first began the model. Each mod was to create a better model (jimping wasn't perfect, etc.). We are still going through those mods as we improve and refine the models.

The piece you have is not a fake, but there are differences between different runs.

Get the carbon fiber C22 Michael Walker with ZDP blade. Isn't more expensive than a Sage 1 and is a much better knife than a Cat.

I love the CAT, it makes a great EDC knife. I'm glad to see the constant and never ending improvements to the knives.
I'm tempted to buy the new version just for the jimping. I would definitely buy a sprint run of the CAT with CF scales and S30 steel, like the original. I'm sure Spyderco could do a much better job this time around.

To straighten out the wire clip and make it flush with the handle, reverse the direction (extending beyond the handle) and bend it gently until you get the desired result. I learned that tip from another member here, but I can't recall who it was.

wow that is a bad lil knife in your edc pic. Is that the coldsteel tuff light pimped? where and how much to get one?!

That is my Alan Davis custom based off the Tuff Lite. It was just under $300 new. Damascus 1095/O1 and Cocobolo scales.

Glad it is not a fake. First thing that caught my eye was the Y on the blade wasn't the stylized spyderco Y.
