I've had two or three email regarding the Falcata since Anton put up his review.

We need 5 or 6 takers to get another run. If anybody wants one please get signed up.

You can sign me up. Right at the top of the list. I want one!!!Thanks for the chance to get one, Uncle Bill!! Rick............. Regular scabbard for me though.

I'd like one too -- with the same scabbard carving as Anton's! Put me down.:D

:
I would also like one IF they are going to be lightened up to the 2 1/2 pound weight that Anton recommends.

Anything over that is getting to be a little too much for me
anymore.;)

Go a head and sign me up Bro since they should be a little lighter.
What the haiel I want one anyway.:)

Guess ya can't make something anymore bolder than it is.:)
Edited the subject line to remove and such.

I'm with Yvsa - I can't be slinging around any three-pound swords. Please tell whichever kami makes mine that I would rather break the blade than my shoulder:) Seriously, if they could keep it in the two-pound range, I'll cheerfully forego the customary HI guarantee - just make it light, I'll take responsibility for the consequences of my own actions. Don't try to protect me from myself by overbuilding.

Bro it's just my opinion but I think we should follow Anton's advice on this one.
I believe he knows from where he speaks about swords.
And I know the kamis prefer to make a new model all the same as it saves a lot of confusion on their parts.

We both know, and probably some others here as well, how Design by Commitee works and this is a good example when everyone wants something different.:D
It's like building a mouse to government specifications where in the end you get an elephant that doesn't work, and that really
stinks.:D

After the initial run and when the kamis are more familiar with the design let the guys who want a heavy one make a special order. That will insure that everyone gets what they want.:)
And doing it that way would simplify matters and the carved wooden scabbards wouldn't be such a hassle as that's just one thing and the kamis probably don't make them anyway.
Do they?

I would like a carved scabbard as well, but realistically I believe the standard scabbard would be better unless someone just wanted to hang it on the wall.:)
The ideal solution which would be more expensive,is to have both a carved wood scabbard and a standard scabbard for work made for the guys who want a wooden scabbard.:D
But I for one will forgego what's cool and go for what's practical.
I have enough fancy ones for now and will settle for the standard scabbard.:D

And since the Falcata is a sword and not a khukuri lets not make another heavy knife that any of the upper midrange khukuris would fulfill with excellence.

How about it guys?:D

Maybe the way to pitch it to the kamis is that this is the sword that came from the West to inspire their ancestors to make the khukuri, and we are not looking for the improved product their great-great-grandsires developed, but an accurate copy of the sword those old Macedonians carried to the banks of the Indus long before the Buddha was born.

I am really interested, but how much $$ for basic everything?
I am not worried about anything the kamis will do a good job, I put my faith in their mastery of steel.

'bout 195, if it hasn't changed. I've heard PayPal is charging a bit more, so Unk may have to raise his prices by 3%?

I love the blade, but I've got to have two hands on a sword. :(

I completely agree with Yvsa. I would also be happier to have the blade lighter and balanced closer to the handle, as in the original design. I just did not want there to be a problem with differing opinions on what should be made. It does seem that the majority would prefer a lighter and more sword oriented blade. I am also for that. I am also all for the standard style user scabard, as I intend it more as user and less as wall hanger. I will follow the general standard concensus on this design. I would prefer to keep the cost down also. Fancier scabbard would mean higher cost. I prefer user oriented and cost effective. Just my .02 worth. I look forward to seeing one in my home!!!!!!!

I like your thinking, Bro. It's from a man whose been there and done that. You know how it works in the shop when you ask a dozen guys the best design and the best way to do it. You get a dozen different answers.

Let's keep this up at the top for a couple of days and figure out the best way to go. If I order three different scabbard along with three light models and two heavy ones it isn't going to work.

I think the lighter weighted version should be standard. If someone wants a heavier sword for chores then a 25" Sirupati or Kobra would be a better choice. The falcata, like the katana, is pretty much all weapon IMHO.

Something else we should decide on as far as standardization goes is the problem with the pin at the bent part of the handle causing the wood to crack. Anton suggested either omitting it with future models or placing something like a brass ring over it. Personally, I'd rather just the kamis leave the one pin off instead of messing with the brass ring. With the order I'm sending to Bill (should arrive by the end of the week, uncle) I enclosed a picture of Anton's prototype with the pin blotted out so that the kamis would get the idea. The problem with this solution is that the falcata may look a bit funny with the one pin missing, so on this YMMV.

1. Berkley said, "an accurate copy of the sword those old Macedonians carried to the banks of the Indus long before the Buddha was born."

This is just an editorial comment, and I apologize if I sound nit-picky, but the Buddha is thought to have been born in the late 7th or early 6thc. BC, while the Alexandrian invasions of India were in the late 4thc. BC. ;)

2. I also apologize if I've contributed to the "design by committee" problem. Personally, I'm not all that concerned with the weight so long as my scabbard is nicely carved/decorated. :)

Research [sic] librarian made big-time error while indulging in rhetorical excess.:o

Sorry that I could not participate in the Falcata threads lately, but the „body shop“ needed more time than expected to get me up and running again.
Of course, put me down for another one. I still strongly suggest making it lighter (2.5 lbs as the upper limit) with deeper fullers and maybe a slightly thinner cross-section. Bring the point of balance closer to the hilt (I included a picture with the model, where I am balancing the model, whose handle slabs where made out of Balsawood, on my finger – this could help the Kamis to get the idea) If all else fails, the blade could be made an inch shorter. Omit the pin at the crook of the handle; it will only cause trouble (even without monsoon season around). And, after explaining the Kamis that this thing, despite similarities in shape, is not a large Khukuri but a sword, they could harden the blade maybe for 2/3 of its length, compared to the blade of my Falcata, which is hardened more “Khukuri-style”.

And, sorry to bring up the scabbard subject up again, a plain wooden scabbard, held together by brass bands, could be an idea, since this is as close to the original’s scabbards as it gets. I am not sure however, how this will influence the price of the Falcata.
