Hi all. I am looking for a fixed blade that I can use for a general camp knife and to keep in my hiking pack. I want something that could be used as my only tool, but I always carry a Leatherman Wave, a SAK, and have a hatchet in camp for firewood. I have heard and read a lot about the F1 and a little less about the MK3. I'm curious if anyone out there has both and can recommend one over the other if you could only have one. I would like something had some corrosion resistance beyond a traditional high-carbon blade and I also want something that isn't so big that I'll be reluctant to carry it.

Any suggestions are much appreicated!

I don't have a MK3 but I could definitely support the F1 for a good general camp knife. Some others to look into would be a Bark River Bravo 1 (or some of their other models such as the River's edge or Fox River), Coldsteel Master hunter.

For more expensive taste look at Busse , Swamprat, Dozier and some of the customs from the makers section of this website.

I went through the same selection prorocess for the same reasons several months ago. I ended up getting the F1 and am very satisfied with it. Great all around camp/pack knife. Not so large I wouldn't carry it which was a big concern for me.

IF you can get a chance to handle them both, then I would make your decision. Both have some great qualities. The MK3 is really well suited for backpacking.

Which sheath option on the F1 did you select? Frankly, neither the leather flap sheath or the molded plastic sheath excite me too much. I am assuming that I'll have a custom kydex or leather sheath made and I've seen the leather custom sheaths for around $45. So after I get a new sheath, the MK3 and the F1 will be around the same price anyway, which doesn't make my decision any easier.

I'm currently not a hunter, but might be giving it a shot (pun intended) sometime in the near future. How does the F1 do at skinning game like deer?

I recall Peter Hjortberger (the owner of Fallkniven) saying that the F1 was their best selling hunting knife, so I guess there are plenty of people who use it for that :D

Personally, I use the H1 as my hunting knife .

Kind regards

Get Normark to make you a sheath. The F1 is an excellent knife for field dressing and skinning; I've used mine on moose and bear. The VG-10 holds an edge as well as my Carbon V blades.
