Last weekend Son of Beanbag and I went to YMCA Camp HI-Rock in the Berkshires for FFFC-Fall Foliage Family Camp. We hiked the AT and around the camp, did some archery, shot BB guns, hung out with friends and I made a bow drill fire.

Here are some Pictures:

The camp lake is awesome:

The camp is right off the AT, so we did some hiking to take in the fall colors:

Our destination was Eagle's Perch on Mt. Race. The trail runs along a precipitous ridge:

Lots of great colors:

Back at camp Son shot BBs and I found rediscovered my youthful archery skills:

This area on the backside of the main lake is called Bullfrog's Bay:

Walking around the hills surrounding the lake we stumbled upon this debris shelter from one of the outdoor living skills classes and a top rope climbing area I had never seen before:

I used my Fletcher Delta 4 to start a hole on my hearthboard and made a bow drill fire:

Thanks and you are welcome sir.

Thanks for acknowledging the time it takes to do the picture thing, and I say thanks to the regulars on this forum who do it more consistently than I.

Beanbag - Neat to be able to do all that with "son of Beanbag" - Memories made that are invaluable. Great photos - thank you!!

Nice pictures and great colours - thanks for sharing.

Great pics and looks like a wonderful time!

Better than foliage pics this w/e 'cause they would have 10" of snow! :( Going to be a mess...

Thanks Doc-

I've been wondering what True Tinder Fungus looked like.

Because I'm very involved with the camp I'll be back there soon enough. So here's a question- How do I harvest, process and use this stuff?

As always awesome pics. It looks like and sounds like you 2 and the others had a great time.
Beautiful fall colors too.

Very nice, such a beautiful spot :) The view from the clifftop is lovely.

Thanks. It's been a colorful fall, but the colors haven't made it down to me yet, so I've been traveling to them.

Your welcome.

I wish I was out doing it again this weekend, but instead I'm hunkered down watching the power flicker listening to trees and limbs snapping and knocking snow off my trees and power lines. Very nasty snow storm for this early, and too much surface area for it collect on with most of the leafs still on the trees.

But I guess there's always next weekend.:)

I may have hiked into the camp when doing the AT in that area if we are talking about the same spot. Mt. Race is a very nice place.

Mt. Race has a population of Timbers.

I never been there in fall. Nice photos! What type of wood did you use for the spindle and fireboard?

I may have hiked into the camp when doing the AT in that area if we are talking about the same spot.

The trail to camp is unmarked and there are some discreet private property signs, but it's not uncommon to have folks wander on to the camp grounds.

The way to camp is as follows: If you walking north up the AT from Sage's Ravine at the CT/MA boarder, you will pass the Laural Ridge camp site on your left, then, just past that, Bear Rock falls/lookout on your right. If you stay on the AT and follow it north along the ridge, you won't find camp. If you follow the Bear Rock falls feeder up stream, you will end up at camp.

Mt. Race has a population of Timbers.

I didn't know that.

I never been there in fall. Nice photos! What type of wood did you use for the spindle and fireboard?

The spindle is White Pine and the fireboard is cedar from a fence plank.

Drop on by sometime.
