Fall Foliage Weekend (Pic Heavy)

Excellent pictures!!! Up here in Northern VT the leaves are just about all gone but it has been a very vibrant year for fall foliage much more than most other years. Sonya and I were out yesterday for a little hike and some squirrel hunting and as you can see the leaves are all gone.

The camp got dumped on yesterday. I got his picture of the dining hall off their website. Almost three feet of snow.

I have slept at laural ridge before.

It was made to replace another site that was shut down. The area has one of the coldest springs I have ever taken water from. Yup I have hiked though that area all the way to the town center. It gets a little iffy on the last 100 feet to and from the AT but that stream is a sure marker. Mt. Race also has one of the biggest pile-o-blueberries I have ever seen.

I've stayed there also, they have provide bear proof boxes to store your food and stuff.

The other site was about 1/4 mile north on the opposite side of the AT, and was called the Bear Rock campsite. It was much nicer- right near the falls, lookout and stream that feeds the falls.

When you say town center, which town are you talking about, Mt. Washington, MA, South Egremont, MA, Copake, NY, or Salisbury, CT?

Darn it, I thought i replied to this days ago, I must have had to leave before I got to it. I remember thinking really nice colors and that it's always good to see the younguns in the woods, but don't remember much else. Thanks for sharing.

Your welcome.

I've been shut down by the man until Nov. 4!! OCCUPY PHOTOBUCKET, OCCUPY PHOTOBUCKET!!:rolleyes::D

I guess I just took too many pics this month. I have two free photobucket accounts to avoid bandwidth issues, but I must have lost track. I really don't need any more expenses right now, so I'm not going to do a paid account.

Lol, that's hilarious. I don't blame you man, I have multiple PB accounts too.

I am not sure as was on foot but the town was in MA, maybe Egremont. There was a large area of ferns along the path on the way to a road. I think there was also a gravel pit on route. I like to explore a bit if there is time. On a side note there are also rattlers on Everett and the state forrest but nothing beats Mt. Algo and the world class hotspot known as Schaghticoke Mountain if someone wants to see a Timber.

Yup, South Egremont. I know exactly the route your talking about and the gravel pit.

Thanks Doc-

I've been wondering what True Tinder Fungus looked like.

Because I'm very involved with the camp I'll be back there soon enough. So here's a question- How do I harvest, process and use this stuff?

Take a 'whacker' (machete, hammer, hatchet, whatever) and whack it off of there. The orange inner is used as is, although you might have to let it dry a little bit.

It can be used to catch a spark from flint and steel and also used as a coal extender. It's also used as a medicine, called "Chaga", especially in Russia, or so I am told. Among other things, it is used for stomach cancer, IIRC. Also Rick Marchand's mentor (his name escapes me for the moment - damn 65 year old memory :( ) wrote an article In Wilderness Way magazine about using it as an field-expedient 'stove'.

Alan "Bow" Beauchamp is his name. Here is a link to the Fungus Stove and Fungus Fireboard.

Yep, Alan has written some awesome pieces on tinder fungus and a few other things. He is a great guy to talk to and I love how he inspires one to go out and experiment in their own environment and see what new things they discover about it. About the only bad thing Alan has ever done to me was introduce me to this crazy guy up in Wheatly Ontario.
