Are there any folder will a really smooth fall shut action that are also about 3" in length? I ask because it seems to me to get this type of action there is no other way than to have a big, beefy blade.

I would recommend the Ferrum Forge Gent. New run just started, and mine is a plainly fantastic flipper. Perfect detent, buttery smooth, almost custom like action (not quite as perfectly smooth, but it's also like $80). I'm floored that this knife isn't in the $150+ range.

I actually got one about a week ago and I would agree. The action is very good, and probably the closest to "fall shut" I have in a 3 inch knife. Just wish there was a bittttt of jimping on the flipper tab.

I dont remember the length, but the North Arm Skaha has some of the smoothest action of any knife under 500 bucks. And probably better than most above it.

My Spyderco Southard has fall shut action.

Alot of times the lock determines the “fall shuttyness” Liner and framelocks are less likely to fall shut unless you hold the lockbar off the blade, otherwise the detent ball will drag on the blade creating friction.

Knives like with the compression or axis lock and others where you can hold the lock off of the blade are more likely to fall shut. I find that if you keep the lock bar pushed over most knives with bearings will fall shut.

Usually on liner and frame locks I unlock the knife, close it just enough so the corner of the tang is sitting on the detent. Then I push lightly on the spine which causes the blade to slam shut.

Although I am now beginning to worry that style of closing may cause the detent ball to flatten. The detent on my well used HD7 is totally flattened.

I just preordered one of those and really looking forward to it. It's close. I think maybe 3.3".
The second version that just went up? Good buy. Its got the slightly smaller flipper and the kick ass wire clip on it. You'll love it.

The hogue series are super fall shutty! I have the 4” EX-01 but the 3.5” is awesome as well. The whole line is very cool and the “G-mascus” looks pretty awesome!

My ZT 0460 will fall shut with the slightest dab of the wrist, which amazes me for such a small blade. Come to think of it, my 0450 and my 0900 do as well.

My Soutard doesn’t even come close (but it’s still my favorite overall blade ever!).

Yea in blue. Looks pretty sweet!

Thanks! My 450 is pretty close to perfect too!

Forgive me, but why pose the question when it seems you already own or have ordered the whole segment?

I'm just sort of gathering opinions. I mean none of these are still really free fall gravity only shut you know. I don't own any knives like that and I was just wondering if any one does that are around 3 inches.

I think the steel will cutjack is supposed to have a good fall shut action.

Yeah, nothing other than an axis lock(or similar mechanism) is going to free fall. That’s what happens when you have friction.

This one flips hard and still falls shut a little too easily for my tastes, though it's a bit larger (3.27"):

I prefer my knives to have super smooth action, but to not quite fall shut, if possible.
