What is your fallback addiction when you've been striking out on DOTDs?

I've been in a significant dry spell and nothing else seems to really be making up for that feeling I get when the triangular box gets here...

Guns. Now that I'm old enough to buy them it's hard to resist. Just got a Colt Commander in .45 ACP and it's a beauty.

Hi Sassas:

I always miss out on the DOD because of work and then I despair about what I might have had.

I make knives in my spare time and turn to that. But, I would never tackle a kukri. That must come from a kami.

Thanks, Steve

Used to collect books and comics, I'd have to say guns also- or some outdoor equipment.

Primitive skills . That almost sounds oxymoronic until you try just a few of the myriad skills those who came before posessed .

I've been thinking about taking up archery...based in large part on your other posts. It seems to fit the need for finding a new this or that every now and then as well as developing a skill. It's a little hard figuring out where to start though.

Milsurp rifles.

Beech K31. Mauser M48A. Mosin-Nagant M38. Finnish M39 (!). Walnut K31.

All addiction is the same- just make sure it doesn't hurt you and you can afford it.

Fallback... it's like turning the dial on the radio. You're still listening.

But it's a lot better than booze, drugs or cigarettes. And don't forget gambling! The casinos have a place where you can sign over you car title... that's just sad. These four addictions destroy lives. Sometimes fast, sometimes slow.

Guy I know has tens of thousands of dollars in baseball cards. I don't get that one, but I understand. Maybe you know a "comic book guy"... If you were really broke, you could collect matchbook covers- some people collect spoons. Whatever floats your boat. Just don't go boating on credit.

"Turkish Mauser w/all accessories $59.95..." Hmmm..... Nah.

The M44, maybe.

My biggest problem with hoobbies/addictions is I lose interest or get sidetracked easily. I have been riding motorcycles since 1971, and have 2
observed trials bikes languishing in my garage. Golf grabbed me back last year.
Guns have had me going for a long time, off and on. They are on again, currently. Fishing, and hiking pass by once a year or so, as does an annual canoe trip. Sobriety has been my biggest commitment for the last 20 yrs, and today is the 20th anniversary of my sobriety. I have a son, age 6, that I have been raising by myself since he was about 8 months old. His Mom chooses not to be in his life at all. We are now doing Tiger Cub Scouts,
since October.

If it's not khuks, then it's SAKs and Multi-tools. I hate to be caught anywhere without a tool to get the job done. I have one for every occation, as well as a few made up ones.
If it's not khuks or SAKs/Multis, then it's movies. I collect DVDs. Usually it's great old horror flicks from the mid 70's to the early/mid 80's that I saw as a kid, but forgot about until i see the box. They just don't make them like they used to;) I must have a 100 of the things.

Old tools

Planes

chisels

brace and bits

saws

just don't get involved yourself, makes them old tools that much more expensive to get!

Woodworking, both with machinery and old tools. I love looking for old steel on e-bay, pawn shops, thrift stores, farmers markets, and flea markets. Planes, and chisels mostly, but anything cast steel turns my head. Nowadays I've turned to making knives the Sarge way. I'm trying to finish one today. Hopefully the MRS don't need too much help cleaning up today.

Reading.

Lately, playing with a Chinese Rope Dart and doing some work with double edged straight sword.

Playing with the kids.

bicycling/endurance training and doing a little yoga.
