In the midst of all the buying, selling, and trading, I sometimes end up in a situation where I'm waiting on a knife to come in that I plan on carrying. And to get that knife, I had to trade/sell my primary user, or one I planned on using. What I'm left with are a bunch of safe queens I don't want to risk scratching up. So, I have a fallback knife. This is a knife I've had for a very long time. It's not worth enough to sell, but its still a good knife, so I keep it around for when I have nothing else to carry. The knife no longer holds my interest aesthetically. My tastes have changed, and its no longer a style I would go out of my way to purchase or trade for. But MAN, is it a great performer. For me, this knife is my S30V Blur. These go for around $75-$85 new now, so it isnt worth enough for me to sell it. She gets no real love. Just a user in one of the junk drawers. Shes in my pocket today. I took a moment to really look at this knife, and I appreciated it for the first time in years. It truly is a dependable, workhorse of a knife. Feels perfect in hand. I hardly even notice its there while im using it. Nothing flashy. S30v on an open body aluminum frame. Recurve blade, which isnt something I really even like. Handles are black with that track material in the inserts. To be honest, it isnt appealing to me at all. It just performs SO well, and has stood up to everything without any need for maintenance Does anyone else have a "fallback" knife they feel similarly about? Something you wont trade just because it basically NEEDS to be there when you need it? Would love to hear about it! They're like water. On a hot day, you might really want a soda, or a beer. But if you can't get one, you'll just take a drink from the hose. Its what you really needed anyway.

Good topic. While I initially started off with some upper-mid-range knives in premium steels, handle materials, and mechanisms, and eventually realized that "it's what you really needed anyway" observation you noted. Then pretty much all of my carry knives started falling into that category. So I mostly carry "penny knives" these days for my own purposes, and when I misplace one I just grab one of the others until I find it again. :D

Boker Titan, Cold Steel Medium Voyager Clip, or a Spyderco Tenacious. No matter what higher quality knife I may carry, one of those three are always between rotations.

Spyderco tenacious, and a handful of kershaws. I wouldn't say that I hate to love them, because I don't love them. They're good left pocket or desk drawer knives, but they're never going to be in the spotlight.

Not exactly a high end folder but I'm sorta stoked about the Kershaw Natrix I have on order with
Kershawguy.com.

Case Sodbuster Jr. My 'I wouldn't care if it got lost or broke or confiscated by security' knife.

Hahah, I love how you put that^

For me, its these 3.
(Sorry, 2 are fixed).
Just 3 pure beaters that I loved aesthetically when I first got them but my tastes have recently changed. The swamp rat ratmandu I still love the looks of though, just not as much as I once did.
Still love and have kept all 3 because they have been abused and I know I can rely on each and all of them.

Spyderco Tenacious for me as well. That knife has handled a whole lot of messes and I still use it when I know I'll be really beating on a knife.

Before that it was a Gerber Paraframe. I got one for free and I'll give credit where credit is due, it took a ton of abuse without any issues. I literally stabbed that knife through a front door multiple times and all it did was scratch the coating.

These are all great! I felt like this category needed some love. Glad to hear you all still appreciate the under appreciated :)
