I've got plenty of money, and have been trying to find a new Spyder for awhile, but honestly, while I like a ton of models, I'm not seeing any right now that I like enough to buy...what's wrong with me?

It is probably just your subconscious realization that Christmas is coming up, and if you buy them all for yourself, people won't know what to give you :D

You're warped. If you don't like the Caly III, there's something wrong with you. :D :D :D

Yep, there's definitely something wrong with you if you don't like the Caly 3.

It happens. When it comes round my way again where things get stagnant its when I start shopping fleabay looking for specials on some older Spydies I missed out on. This has always kept me going until something new and exciting came around.

What about the Captain? Or the P'kal? Or the new Hossum choppers that are coming out? Do you have a Manix yet? To be honest, I'm kind of envious of your "condition". I have the opposite problem. There are too many Spydercos that I want!

Dont worry AM... come the next few months I'm sure there will be a new Spyderco model that will catch your eye; be it fixed blade or one of the ZDP sprint models. Save your coins!

I wish I knew if that samaritan was coming out for sure or not. I'd definitely pick up one of those. I just need something a little more exotic than Spyderco's current offerings, I guess.....looking to replace my beloved Blue Bump. But we all know how hard knives like that are to come by.

yeah but if i remember correctly you always get the ones where the thumbhole is too sharp :)

Any reasons why you do not want to replace your Blue Bump?
May be you really need to handle Caly3. I fall in love with this knife when I saw its pictures from Amsterdam Show long time ago and I bought it when it's just come out. This knife exceeded my expectations, it is even better than I thought. I carry it all the time. I will not try to write a review, few people already did it much better than I can.
May be you just still in stress because of accident with you Bump and you know that it takes just few minutes for somebody to damage your favorite knife.
Good luck.

You do remember correctly. Actually, not lately. The last couple I've bought have had perfectly fine thumbholes (Military, Manix). I did buy a couple that were too sharp and I still believe that it was a defect. As you can see, it didn't turn me off Spyderco in any way. I own a piece of sandpaper and I know how to use it. :D

I'm in a similar spot. There are several models I'd like, but not sure they offer anything that's isn't pretty much covered by what I already have.

Soap box time:

I'd like it if Spyderco released something that's truly revolutionary. Something radical, something totally new. Something that opens up a whole new way of thinking about using, carrying, playing with, a knife.

And no I don't have any ideas to offer. ;)

That's a pretty tall order! Since the knife has been in a state of continual refinement for the last 10,000 years or so, how much more room for refinement do you think there is? (Trick question- of course there is a lot)
Spyderco has already shifted the paradigm in 2 very important ways, with the Spyderhole and the pocket clip. I suppose if anyone can come up with another something revolutionary it might be them.

But I have a suggestion. If you really want to see something radical and new, something that you think would seriously change the way knives are used, think really hard about what that something might be. Think about what it is about a knife that could make it better, no matter what that might be, and then think about how that could be accomplished. Sit down and write a list of dream things that you would like your knife to do, and then think creatively, even absurdly, about how it could happen. People like you and me have just as much potential to come up with the "next big thing" as anyone else. I guarantee that Sal and co. are already thinking about this as hard as they can. I'm sure they wouldn't mind if we came up with an idea that would help them sell a couple million knives. Heck, I bet they might even pay you if you came up with such an idea.

Well, I'm not buying another blue bump (I might give into a green, but it's unlikely) just because I don't like to buy the same knife twice...it limits the experience I get with different knives...better to try something new.
The caly3 is really cool, but I have trouble trusting lockbacks and it's just not exotic enough for a Bump replacement. Spyderco just doesn't make that much in the exotic sense...the Spyker and Persian variations are a nice start, but I just can't seem to pull the trigger on them. It's just that my last two knives have been Benchmades, so I figure it's time to get another Spyder, but I can't find anything I like quite enough....

Moonwilson. I have thought about it along these lines: what jobs does a knife do?

Well obsiously cut, also obviosuly be a collectors piece. I think a significant job that is not explicitly mentioned is "knife as entertainment".

One way to approcach entertainment is to make it interactive. Take a balisong for example, it's fun and entertaining to practice and do tricks with.

But, how interactive is a lockback? Uh, not very, at least in it's current configuration.

Maybe another might be customization. This has been mentioned before, but what if you could buy add one scales of not only different color, but different shape?

Maybe Spyderco could launch a simple (for CAD/CAM) application that would allow any user to submit their drawing for a handle, and have that handle produced via automated mathods, and shipped to the user where they could install it on a standard knife platform?

So for example you could design your own handle for your manix. You could even share this design with others online.

How cool would that be?

For spyderco it would be a totally brand new revenue stream.

Artfully Martial,
I agree.
I'm just not that "wowed" by the current Spyderco offerings.

I like the waved Endura 4....but it sits in a box while my Benchmade 710 rides in my pocket.

The Axis-lock is hard to beat, and the Compression-lock is not really the answer in my opinion.
Maybe the Ball-bearing lock could be fitted to the Military?

Or how about bringing back some of the classic Spyderco liner-locks...but this time make them titanium frame-locks!
Imagine a ti frame-lock Lum Chinese...or Herbst...or Centofante I...or Vieli!!!!
