Fallkniven A1 vs. Swamp Rat Camp Tramp

I was wondering if you would prefer the Fallkniven A1 or the Swamp Rat Camp Tramp if you had to choose between the two. Does anyone own both and can give details about both knives compared to each other? Which knife is more durable in regards to toughness, edge retention, etc.? Why do you choose either knife over the other?

I can only speak for the Fallkniven. The A1 is as solid a knife you can find for its size and made of some GREAT STEEL.....VG-10. Mine is solid VG-10 but I think there are coming laminated now. My A2 is laminated.

Negative comments about Busse Combat have been withdrawn by me!

I can't speak for way back when the Basic's were being made, but I have not ran into many of the problems that you have mentioned in the last couple of years I have dealt with them.

The CT is a very good knife, and popular for a reason. You can't go wrong with one if you can find one. They have been discontinued.

I have not had the chance to hadle a Fallkniven of any kind, but have heard good things.

Are they both comparable in price?

The down side to the Fallkniven, AFAIK, is that they do not have the resale ability of the Swamp Rats. AFAIK, there are only two names selling within minutes of being posted right now, and that is Busse and Swamp Rat.

If anyone has noticed another name I would like to know so I can investigate whether or not I like the knives.

As far as a user I don't think you will go wrong with buying either. Get what feels good in your hands, and meets your needs.

Thanks.

Is the Fallkniven flat ground or convex ground? I prefer a flat grind, much easier to sharpen IMO.

7k7k99,

I think that all the newer Fallkniven knives are concave ground, but as long as you just strop them once in a while there should never be a need to do a complete reshapening, especially with their laminated blades.
Think I better go look at some of mine just to make sure I am telling you correctly.

No comparison the Camp Tramp will smoke the Falkniven hands down in any clssification. there is nothing the A-1 can do that the CT can't and there are many things the CT can do that the A1 will not. Edge holding is much better wit the CT and the CT's steel can take much more shock which for a camp/survival knife is a must. I have had VG10 chip, I have not had any Busse product ever chip and I abuse all my knives. Get a Rattweiler and you will never look back.

The Falkniven are convex ground but have a slight v-ground secondary edge, it is really thin, about 0.005" thick and just barely visibly by eye. You can sharpen it just the same as a flat ground knife or bleed it back into the primary and sharpen it as if it were fully convex ground.

The Camp Tramp and A1 are two really different blades. The A1 is more of a really heavy utility/tactical, very strong due to the thick profile. The Camp Tramp is more of a working bowie blade, much higher chopping ability and in general a better cutting blade.

They're both great outdoor knives, but I'd prefer the CT because of its excellent carbon steel and sturdy crinkle coating.

for those of us who have no idea how to sharpen convex grinds, and only have experience with the sypderco sharpmaker, it would probably be best to stay with a flat grind, would you agree?

Yes, that is how Fallkniven actually recommends sharpening them anyway. They are nice knives if you want heavier use stainless. Peter H. (owns Fallkniven) is a pretty straight forward kind of guy. You can email him directly and talk to him about the designs, why they are the way they are. No silly hype about operators or whatnot, they are just based on what he thinks a good field knife should be able to do and will tell you exactly what this is if you ask him.

They've been discontinued? Where did you hear this? If they are discontinued then I think the Fallkniven A1 looks likd even more of an option for me. I found a Fallkniven for ~$128 with a leather sheath so it was about the same as a camp tramp. By the way, thank you all for all these posts about these two knives. I appreciate it.

At the time when I was buying Busse knives the ONLY satisfaction I got was because I was dealing with Andy Prisco(now the owner of ATC). The Busse factory would not answer any emails and they did not return phone calls.

Just plain lousy personal relations with those wanting to be customers.

At the time, I felt that the only good thing about Busse was having Andy Prisco on their team.

How's this for an attitude!!!

Having only heard good things about Busse I did a search for Andy Prisco and came up with this

http://TROLLING.com/

Is this some well known freud in the knife world?

The Camp Tramp is manufactured by Busse's sister company, Swamp Rat Knife Works (which is managed by Jerry Busse's wife Jennifer). Swamp Rat makes "more affordable" versions of Busse blades, without sacrificing quality. While there is some friendly rivalry between Rats and Hogs; both will identify that Swamp Rat makes hard use knives.

The Camp Tramp knife was discontinued from the factory a few months ago. This is because they will soon be releasing a new line of Swamp Rat Knives at any time. You will only be able to buy a Camp Tramp on the resale, in the Exchange section; or in the WTB forum. Because of their popularity, you can expect a higher resale.

My 2 cents, wait a little bit and check out the new Swamp Rat knives. I got my first two (a Ratchet and a Safari Skinner) a few weeks ago, and managed to order a Howling Rat just before they were discontinued last week.

I prefer the Fallkniven. I've never failed to accomplish any task that I needed to accomplish with the Fallkniven.

Funny that many want their "bush" knife to do what a hatchet & bow saw are designed for.
I'd rather have the A1 on my hip for most food prep, etc.
A folding saw for felling standing timber & a good hatchet to split with.
That's just my feelings.

Wow, that is quite an attitude Ron! Our records indicate that you haven't bought a knife from Busse Combat in over 6 years. So, I guess I have to ask "why", after 6 years, you suddenly start tearing into my company's reputation when your experiences date back this far? This is the second time that you have tried to publicly damage our reputation in the past few weeks, and both have been in threads about Swamp Rat??? And I also have to ask "why" in both of your anti-Busse tirades, you reference how great Andy Prisco was and then point out that he is now with ATC? This behavior on your part does seem a bit odd and very suspect.

Feel free to read about Justin Gingrich's experiences with Andy Prisco on the aforementioned website. It is, of course, important to note that it is only one side of the story.

Since you have not responded to any of my emails over the past few weeks I believe that it is imperative that you contact me directly via email at: jerry@bussecombat.com or call my office at (419) 923-6471 in order to resolve any issues that you may still have with Busse Knife Co.. . . even if they date back more than 6 years ago.

We have always done, and will continue to do, what ever is necessary to resolve any customer's problem.

Thanks,

Jerry
