fallkniven f-1

The F1 is so far superior to any Mora that it's not even funny. However, that is not to say that Mora's aren't good. They are. And they are also fantastically cheap. Here in Finland you can get an F1 for about 100 €. A decent Mora is about 4 €. So, you can get a couple of dozen Moras for the price of one Fällkniven F1...

Fällkniven F1 is excellent, easily one of the very best production knives ever made in every way. I prefer the black teflon coated model, since I occasionally have to deal with salt water. Moras are amazing quality for the price, and are sturdy knives in themselves. But the best part is that they're so cheap you don't have to care if you misplace one, two or three of them, and so cheap that some people don't actually bother sharpening them, but rather just buy a new one when the old dulls out. Moras are also very light in weight. So light, in fact, that it would be a good idea to always carry a Mora, no matter what other tools you have with you. They're good when you have to do something a knife isn't meant to do. Instead of abusing a hundred dollar knife, abuse a 5 dollar Mora.

Depends what you mean by abuse. :) When I pay $100 for a knife, I expect it to take the "abuse"... long periods of cutting without dulling, no chipping if I hit a knot, hard batoning and all that fun stuff. I expect to be able to dig up some roots and just touch up the edge. Based on everything I've read about the F1, I believe it would take all that and smile. I would certainly use/abuse it harder than a Mora.

If by abuse, you mean scraping rust off bolts and prying in tight spots and other things that usually void warranties, I agree I would take a chance on sacrificing a Mora to get the job done.

True that. F1 can take a lot of pain for a blade of that size. :) By abuse I mean just the stuff you're never supposed to do with a knife - using it as a make-shift crowbar, trying to cut metal or clean off rust and such.

Elen, I'm sure if you and I and/or most of the guys who post here wandered around the woods for an afternoon and compared knives, we'd get along just fine :) Welcome to W&SS!

I bought a F1 2 years ago and have never once regreted it.Fallkniven knives continue to impress me more and more the more I handle them.I have an S1 now that is my #1 go-to knife for every day tasks. My F1 is strapped to my pack and gets regular abuse in the woods opening cans (I opened a can with it and it's edge was unaffected)as well as any other camp related torture I can throw at it.

Thanks. I bet we'd all get along, indeed. At least we wouldn't run out of knives! :D

Has anyone noticed their F1 handle getting marred from the rivets inside the leather sheath?

Normark has a permanent cure for that. His kydex rig for the F1 with a firesteel mount is a work of art.

I'll have to take a look at my leather sheath tonight.

Get a Mora. You'll save mucho $, and you'd be surprised at how much of a beating they can take. Hell, for the price of an F1, you could get 7 or 8 Moras! They hold up pretty well for most basic bushcraft. Just a suggestion...

I own both and I'll take the F1 when the fan starts to smell bad. Moras are great to sprinkle around your vehicle kits and tool box, so you are never without a knife. If someone is on a budget, they are a very good tool. If you have the spare change, the F1 is about all the knife you will ever need. IMHO, the F1 is the best knife you can get for under $100.

Another vote for the F1. I got one begining of summer and love it. Got me through Cody Lundin's Provident Primative class in AZ and was still shaving sharp. After making a rabbit stick at home with it, i stropped it and have kept a great edge. I'm thinking of adding a WM1 and a S1 but even then I think this will be my "go to" knife for a long time to come.

My bud went on the class with me and took a Mora that I gave him for Xmas. It did great, but he liked my F1 so much he recently spent almost $1k on an A1, S1, and F1. He's hooked.

Mike
