Looking to buy my Dad a good fishing knife for his birthday. Came across the Fallkniven F2. Anyone have any experience with it? Is it a little too thick? Is it still being made?

Thanks

Hi,

I have a Fallkniven F2 in my tackle box, and have used it but not extensively due to catch and release at the lake I frequent.

However here is some info for you.

The F2 was changed a bit about a year ago and the blade is now a bit thinner. I have an original version with the thicker blade. The blade is definitely thicker and less flexible than most fishing knives.

I haven't had the opportunity to examine the new version so I'm not sure how much thinner it is, but suspect the blade is still fairly robust.

Fallkniven makes excellent quality knives, from that perspective you can't go wrong with any of their offerings.

Many of their knives are designed to perform more than one function (as is common with many knives, regardless of manufacture), the F2 follows that design philosophy and will serve well,as a fishing knife as well as a general camp and food prep knife.

The big question as to whether or not your Dad will enjoy the knife will depend on his preference for blade thickness/flex in a fishing knife. If he is looking for a knife specific to fishing, then he may be more familiar with a thinner blade design with a bit more flex.

If he is looking for a well rounded "general" purpose camp knife with a design lean toward fishing, he will probably enjoy the F2 very much.

The F2 is stainless steel with a thermorun handle, it is well designed for wet environments and the handle material retains a good grip when wet or slimy or if wearing gloves.

I have an F2 that I got only a couple of months ago. Given the time of year and weather, I haven't used it much. It is very sharp out of the box, the VG-10 steel is excellent, and it is a nice size. I will use mine primarily for hunting and think it will suit those duties fine. The blade is not flexible like a traditional fillet knife, it's more like a boning knife with a fillet knife shape. The handle is very comfortable and durable thermorun with a lanyard hole at the end. I think it would be an excellent salt water knife or for larger fish, since the blade will cut fish spine, fins, head, etc. with ease. It's also small enough for cleaning trout and bass. I would say it can do all fishing duties very very well except filleting, which I think it would do adequately. The kydex sheath that comes with is cheesy, but does the job. I'm not sure it's worth the $100+, but it is a good knife. Also, there's a guy on youtube (I think an Aussie), that has a few vids cleaning salt water fish with the older model. Just do a search on fallkniven f2 and he comes up.
