Fallkniven or Cold Steel

I have both the Fallkniven NL 1 and the Cold Steel Trail Master San Mai III. Without a trace of doubt the Fallkniven is the better knife. The handle is more comfortable, overall nicer fit&finish, nice leather sheath.

I have never had Fallkniven so I can't say anything about them but I have had several CS products & I really like them for the money ! I say ColdSteel , I like the SRK model myself :D but it's whatever floats your boat :)

As much as I like Fallkniven, I don't think it's fair to compare the higher priced Fallknivens to the Trailmaster. I think the A1 would be a better comparison in terms of price and I'd still prefer Fallkniven over CS. In terms of models and price not being an issue, I'd go with Fallkniven.

Don't be fooled though, all these votes for Fallkniven doesn't mean that the Trailmaster or Recon Scout won't get the job done. You'll find that a lot of people generally are swayed away from CS product regardless of their performance because of their opinions of the company's owner. There are plenty of CS products that are very good. The Carbon V Recon Scout was my first quality fixed blade. I found the handle to be too thin for my hands and my hands aren't very big.

If you have an ability to hold either knife, I suggest you do that. Pick based on which models feels better and suit your needs best. Any of the knives you mentioned will work.

Nothing personal to the OP, more to some of the other comments- Anyone who can afford either of these knives can surely afford the $10 A YEAR to support these forums where you get so much enjoyment and information, no?

I agree here:thumbup:.

I also think it's okay to look around first to make sure that you're really going to be spending time on this website. But if you are using this website regularly, the information that you'll find here is more up to date and specific than any book you'll pay for at the bookstores. This is the place to know more about knives than just about anywhere else. That's why I think you should support it.

The Fallkniven Thor locks off anything made by CS. You will find that people who reccommend the CS do so because of the difference in price between the two blades, or because they have no experience with Fallkniven. It seems like comparing a Chevy and an Aston Martin. Chevies are fine, they are cars, they work... But they're no Aston Martins... (I should mention that i have the Trailmaster and a Recon Scout in both Carbon V and SK-5, and i like them just fine for the price)

Another reason for supporting this place is to be able to look yourself in the mirror.
I am not sure I could do so, if I hung around here for a long time on the backs of the owner and members who do support the site. I am not sure I could do so and be happy with what I saw in that mirror.

This place only exists because of the generosity of the owner and it's members. It is a great gift to the knife community. Saying something like screw the 10 bucks is nothing more than a slap in the face for that gift.

It might be more appropriate to be glad that the owner and many members here do think it is worthwhile for Bladeforums to exist so much so that they come out of pocket to help make sure that it does.

Screw the 10 bucks! Use Google! in the search bar type "whatever you're searching for" site:www.bladeforums.com. You may have to look for a minute, but it saves you 10 bucks a month!

Perhaps this needs to be moved to W&C so Shawn79 can find out for sure what we think of guys that say Screw BladeForums, because that is what is being said when he says he will not support the forums, BTW: Going Platinum does not even cost 1/2 of 10 dollars a month. Get your facts straight before spouting off and inserting foot.

Don't want to hyjack this thread, but have to ask since it has been raised here. I am located in Australia and tried to join up but only seem to have the option of Gold for $30usd. Is this right??

I looked at Knifeworks and the NL-2 is almost 100 bucks more expensive than the Recon Scout. Anyway I would choose the NL-2 or maybe the A1 or A2 if I really needed that huge knife.
I have one knife from CS, a SRK in Carbon V, but I have about 26 Fallknivens and more are coming in. :)

No matter if Cold Steel sells a good product or not, the person representing CS behaves like an angry teenager and naturally it shines off on the product. Have you ever seen the owners of Victorinox, Ontario, Ka-Bar etc. rage out on other knife makers and call them thiefs and criminals. Sometimes the CS homepage looks like something from Myspace.

In the old beige sheath the Fallkniven used to scratch like hell. For that reason alone the Cold Steel is better cosmetically, as I had both and the sheath did not scratch the Cold Steel anywhere near that bad (note it was an all Aus-8, not San Mai, so it may have been harder on the surface than the 420 sides of a San Mai)...

Scratching was a universal problem on the old beige sheath Fallknivens in the Northern Light series, and bad enough to be very, very disapointing compared to almost any other knife I ever owned (I don't know what that leather was fed with, but the inside was truly like emery paper in some spots, and even sandpapering/glueing tissue all the way deep inside did not fully solve the scratching). The new Fallkniven black leather sheaths are an unknown quantity to me (but with a much better designed cross-guard snap)... As an alternative, a user-improved felt/tissue-lined Spec Ops sheath will only go up to the Odin in size...

Fit, sharpness and finish is, surprisingly, close to a draw between CS and Fallkniven. I think the Odin is better in size and shape than the Recon Scout, and in my opinion the reverse applies between the Trailmaster and the Thor, the Thor being significantly, and unneccessarily (in my view), 1/2" longer...

The leather stacked grip is more durable but less secure than Kraton: The Odin and Thor handles are very confortable under hard use, perhaps more than the similar CS Kraton shape because they are smoother, but their lack of palm swelling is unsettling when combined with the material: They are confortable under hard use, but somehow scary, because the combination of extreme sharpness, extreme blade heaviness and minimal handle friction gives a strange feeling of constant impending mishaps... With time the leather grows rougher, but they are just about the only knives I ever owned that inspired fear in me whenever I handled them... The CS Kraton handle is nothing like that...

I think it was a Bladeforum member that had an accident with a Thor that will make you even more afraid of yours... It slipped from his hand while swinging it at air in his kitchen (I do this all the time...), bounced and cut his achille tendon completely... Brrr...

I think all the Cold Steel haters out there are a little over-zealous, as you can definitely get a lot of good utility from the right Cold Steel knife.....

...however...

CS can't compete with Fallkniven when it comes to panache and cool factor. Not even close. Go with Fallkniven if you can.
