Ok guys... here it is. My wife is buying me the knife of my choice, up to about $300 for my birthday, bless her sweet heart!

I have been debating for some time... do I want a Chris Reeve Skinner or do I want to try a Fallkniven?

I've had CR knives and like them a lot. I've heard great things about Fallkniven, but never laid eyes one one yet.

I want a knife that I can use for camp chores and hunting (Deer and Elk). It'll need to be not too big for gutting and will need to use it for quartering Elk too.

My thoughts are the CR Skinner.... or one of the Fallknivens of the following:
F1 with Micarta, NL3, NL4 or NL5.

Can those of you who have used and at least held these in person, give me your thoughts on what you might go for if it were you?

Thanks a lot!!

I like the F1 Micarta

That is a really nice looking knife and one that could be used as an EDC if a guy really wanted I guess. Have you used it much? Nice sheath too!!

Thanks!
I've used it a lot since then. The pic is from when it was new, last spring.
I can't say enough good things about it really.
The handle was a bit smooth at first, but after some hard use, has been roughed up bit, making it grippier. I'll have to see how well it works deep into winter. I haven't tried it with gloves on either. Cuts extremely well and sharpens up like a razor.
Made to be used hard for sure.

The CRK Ubejane skinner is a really nice blade and is pretty much what your looking for.
The Fallknivens are also great knives though.
I dont know if steel choice is an issue for you ?
The CRK is A-2 and the Fallkns are laminate VG-10 with convex edges.

You cant really go wrong with either IMO, its a tough choice :p

I have both - if I could have only one of them .... F1 all the way.
Especially if you don't have a Fallkniven yet, you say you have a CR and let me tell ya - they are nice but not the same as the first time you experience a Fallkniven convex edge.

I say go with the F1 and you will not be sorry!

I'd get a Swamp Rat Hairy Carry and have Rainwalker make you a custom sheath to your specs. Do yourself a favor, and research it at least.

While I'm a big fan of both, have a few from each maker, for hunting knives I'd look into Dozier Knives or Bark River. Sorry for throwing a wrench into your decision.

Doziers look great but 12-14 month wait times don't work at this time.

My first choice for knives is Bark River my second is Fallkniven.
I use my BRK&T Boone & Fallkniven F1 for hunting and general use

CR Knives are fine products but I never like the handles on them... the narrow part at the top was never comfortable to me and felt awkward. The blades themselves are fine but I could just never use them comfortably... but if this is not a problem for you then it's of no concern. I bought a project II back in the day and was excited to get it. But sold it shortly thereafter becuase it just felt alien in my hands. One side note though... I don't know if ASP has changed their thread pitch or not but I was able to attach my Project II to my Asp batton and make a spear with it. Neat little combo. If not the same anymore... someone should make a little adaptor for that... the applications are many.

I like the feel of the Fallkniven stuff. The A1 or A2 (Whichever is similar) is everything I think the Cold Steel SRK was supposed to be and much more. But it depends on how comfortable you are with sharpening a Convex edge. They can be a pain if you aren't used to them. They're not hard to master... but a pain in the begining.

If you have a price range of $300.00 I would also suggest a Busse Combat. Those damn knives are indestructable. And their handles feel good and everything about them just feels good in the hand. But that's a personal thing. You could probably find a good sized user here for your money mark and it would serve you well. I know it will be more rust resistant than the CR, stronger than the FK, and really probably out perform both. But that's just MHO. Good luck with your choice and enjoy.

If you think you might want a Dozier, you should check agrussell.com. They keep some in stock and you might find the one you like.
