are all Fallkniven models made in Japan? or are some made in Sweden? if so, which models? if some models are still made in Sweden, is there any difference in quality?

To the best of my knowledge, I believe that all the Fallkniven knives are made in Japan under Fallkniven control. I have at least a dozen or more Fallkniven models and they are without a doubt all flawless and a joy to use.

I did not know that they were made in japan! Japan seems miles ahead in the cutlery industry than China.

Fällkniven knives are manufactured in Japan. They're great knives, but they are factory production knives still - don't expect completely and absolutely flawless fit and finish (unless you want to be disappointed occasionally, by such things as slightly uneven grind lines or scratches and dents in the blades - though the actual edge should always be flawless). Fällkniven makes a high quality product, and they stand behind them, as well: if there's more than a cosmetic flaw on the knife, that's what the warranty is for. And I do think, if you bought a Fällkniven that had a slight cosmetic flaw that bothered you, their warranty would fix that, as well, for you. I'd recommend a Fällkniven to anyone, any day. :)

Is that a surprise? Japan is generally miles ahead of China in anything when it comes to technology. Japanese technology is good. It's certainly better than most of the tech you'll find in Central Europe, like France or Italy. ;)

Thanks for the info. I wasn't sure if they work like Spyderco, manufacturing the majority of blades off-shore while making their top-end blades in the USA. I certainly have no problem with Japanese made blades, just wanted a little more info before picking up my first - I am looking at my first being a black F1 with full leather sheath.

Is the black blade coating used by Fallkniven like a smooth gun blueing/patina, or is it more like a powdercoat?

Its more like a painted on finish that doesn't hold up to well. The fit and finish of all my Fallknivens is excellent and I would venture to say they are one of the best production knife companies out there.

It was a toss-up between the black and satin finish, I generally prefer non-coated to coated blades, I think I'll go for the non-coated now.

From what I've read, Fallkniven certainly gets no bad reviews at all (much like Busse and Bark River), one of the reasons I want to give them a try!

Thanks all!

I have a black F1 and it is definitely one of my favorite knives (although I wish the handle was just a tiny bit meatier).

The coating is fairly durable but will get scratched up eventually, especially if you get the Kydex sheath.

Get one of each!!!

Its VG-10 steel so a coating isn't really needed and the satin finish Fallknivens look great.

I wish Fallkniven would make a US style folder with that great Fallkniven fit and finish and the laminated 3G steel. It would also be great if their bare blades would come down in price a bit. At least they make bare blades but 100+$ is a bit steep compared to other Scandis.

They are addicting I have 4 coated A1's

Ok Fallkniven fans. Who out there has a picture of the tang on an A-1. I have an older A-1 with the solid VG-10 blade and a rubber handle. What does the tang under the rubber look like? Is it the same as the A-1 blade blanks?

Thanks in advance

What, the P3G doesn't fit for you?
I bought one a couple of weeks ago and it is a great user. Do take notice of Elen's comments though. They are not perfect or even custom/Chris Reeves quality in the finish.

I will be putting my rubber handle A-1 under an x-ray machine this morning. We will know then. I will try to post the results.
