Well I hated the rubbery handle that came on my S1 so I took the scales slated for my blank F1 blade and used them on my S1. This is my first attempt at rehandling a knife.

It was a pain to recess the scales to fit the tang. I epoxied it and added some sawdust to the epoxy to match the colors. The pins are 2 galvanized nails and an aluminum spacer. I had a hard time finding 7/64ths and 15/64ths pins so I had to literally hammer these in. Scales are dyed/stabilized maple.

The original grip was too thin near the end of the tang. It made chopping a pain. With this handle I can use the swell to "choke down" on the grip. I still have some epoxy to clean up on the blade.

The top picture shows the finished result. After I took the other pictures i tapered the guard and made it smaller.

Very nice! Good chioce on the stabilized wood for an outdoors knife. I bet mortising that tang just about drove you nuts, didn't it? :D -Matt-

I used a cutting guide on my Dremel so I could adjust the depth of the cut. But yes it was the most labor intensive part of the process. After a day of drying the epoxy it took maybe 3 or 4 hours to get the handle shape I wanted. All the shaping was done with a Dremel.
