Are these knives any good and is there a better knife about the same size and style, for the same money?

I noticed that it has a convex grind, is it tough to keep sharp and can a gatco maintain the edge.

No, in fact it is rather trivial. I have blunted mine about a half dozen times so far and I simply restore it with a butchers steel. If you want a more polished finish, just wipe it down after that with a fine ceramic rod. You can read a little about its performance here :

I will take the factory edge completly off in a week or two as a side effect of having a look at the durability of the edge in resisting heavy impacts. I don't think regrinding a bevel will be any problem as its not difficult at all with the A1 and just requires a little alteration of the technique to match the convex grind on the S1.
