Is there any need for a coating on a stainless knife?

How durable is the Teflon vs powder coats?

Satin all the way!

I don't know why makers will coat a stainless blade, other than it's easier. I have a few Linders machetes (stainless) and they're all coated.

Doc

Its stainless steel so there isn't much to gain by going with a coating in my opinion.

Satin all the way, coating looks real bad after a few years (maybe months) of good use. :)

It's also redundant because their stainless.

The coating gives some additional protection when the knife is used in salt water but the primary function is to reduce reflexes. It is the same reason why Glock, Kabar and others make sand coloured and green knives.

Eliminating reflection on a military blade could save the life of the user, as their survival is always life and death oriented and the same can be said for a civilian under certain situations.

That said, my choice would be the satin finish. :D

Go satin.I beat the Teflon up on my F1 pretty quick so I sanded it off and I've never been happier. My S1 is satin.

The coating on Fällknivens doesn't hold up very well at all, especially not compared to powder coatings on carbon steel knives. That's really not that surprising - ever tried coating a smooth stainless steel blade? Even so, I rather like it especially on the smaller knives that I won't be chopping with, like the F1 and S1. Good for use around saltwater. Because, stainless steel isn't rust-proof, either. It just rusts less. If you're not going to be around saltwater, go with satin if you like it.

Satin is my choice also! I need another knife like I need a hole in my head. So, I was looking to buy a F1 last night and found em for $79.95 at knife outlet. They seem to be held in high regards on this and other knife forums so I was thinking about trying one.

Mate, at that kind of price, I'd be all over it! :D I'm not sure if it's the best price you'll find in the USA, but it's certainly cheaper than anywhere in Europe!

I've found the coating on the Fallknivens to be durable. As I understand it, they are using Cerakote which is very durable. I have F1 which is coated that has held up really well.

I agree with the others though that satin is the way to go. Once the finish starts wearing you'll wish you had satin. Satin is also said to cut better than a coated blade.

I paid 90$ shipped two weeks ago for a satin F1...love it

Any self respecting Mall Ninja wouldn't be seen dead with a Satin blade....in fact they wouldn't be seen any way !!!!:D:thumbup:

Satin finish. I like the fact that when i clean it it's down to the metal, so when i cut something to eat, it's not going to have cooties still around in the coating from whatever fish guts it's been in.

Satin. I don't like blade coatings in general. Steel should look like steel and I'm not going to be taking out any sentries at my age.

The coatings I've dealt with on carbon blades were more trouble than they were worth. I'd rather put in a little maintenance time and have a clean smooth surface.
