As some of you may know from this thread,

I recently ordered both a Fallkniven Thor and Fehrman knives Extreme Judgement. Well the Fallkniven just came. For those not familiar with this knife,

show_image_in_imgtag.php

Total length: 385 mm (15.15")
Blade length: 254 mm (10")
Blade width: 42 mm (1.65")
Blade thickness: 7 mm (0.28")
Weight (knife): 520 g (1.15 lbs)
Steel: Lam.VG10
Blade hardness: 59 HRC
Butt cap: Alumina
Guard: Stainless, specially anchored
Handle in brown leather: 132 mm (5.2")
Sheath: Brown leather

First impressions, I absolutely love this knife! It's just a beautiful classic looking knife. it's large but it doesn't feel clumsy. The balance point is about an inch above the guard so its slightly blade heavy. Not a bad thing since this is a wilderness chopper/work/survival type knife. It's got a convex grind and edge. You can't see an different grinding near the edge. It's just one perfect grind that takes it from the spine all the way to the edge. Speaking of the edge, It's hair popping sharp! Probably the sharpest large fixed blade I've ever bought. Fit and finish is perfect, I can't find anything wrong in that department. The handle is stacked leather and is quite long. I have big hands and when I grip right under the guard my pinky sits right on the loser red washer. The handle is pretty small in diameter but this doesn't really bother me. It feels secure but it could be better. I put a lanyard on. When using it hard I'll definitely wrap the lanyard around the outside of my hand and attach it below the guard in addition to the hole in the bottom. Using a lanyard in that manner really adds to the grip with this knife. I haven't used it yet but I'm gonna try and go backpacking the next weekend night that we have some decent weather.
There's only one real fault that I can give the knife and it's not a big one. It's the sheath. It's a nice looking sheath, made of leather with a nice Viking helmet and sword logo pressed into the front. The problem is that there is no quick release option, and the belt loop is overly large. The sheath fits the classic look and is very well made. A quick release is just a really nice feature that you should get for a $300+ fixed blade. This could be solved while still keeping a classic style by using a separate belt loop and sheath with a pin, like on the cold steel natchez bowie. As far as the belt loop goes it's about five inches long above the actual sheath and has a retaining snap. I would like to see it be only as large as necessary to accommodate a large belt, if this was the case it would still be plenty big for the retaining strap. What happens is when you go to draw the knife the sheath raises up off your leg. Not a big deal but a little bit of an annoyance.
All in all I really like the knife and am happy with the purchase. Although I may get a custom sheath. I can't wait to see how it does on a backpacking trip. I intend to split wood, chop, whittle, and maybe even cut some food. I may be able to get out for a night this weekend. If so I will add some more about how it does.

Hey congrats! Glad you got it!

I've had mine for a couple months and feel pretty much the same way about it. I was wondering: Does your sheath put a big scratch down the blade like mine does? This is not a huge deal, but like you said I expected more from an expensive knife like this.

I too was thinking about an aftermarket sheath, as there are some very nice ones out there, but HAVE YOU SEEN THE PRICE on these? $200-$300 for the ones I looked at! OUCH!

Anyway just for aesthetic purposes I decided to re-dye my Falkniven sheath... here are a few pics:

After- the new color is "oxblood"

Just don't drop it on your ankle like I did, or it'll look like this...

Sorry for the gore! and sorry if you've already seen this!

Hope you like your Thor as much as I do... I can attest that it cuts REALY well! LOL!

Beautiful knife! I really want that but current as student 399€ price tag is about 1,5 month's money for me... I need to eat too ^^ But when I get real paychecks, I'll buy Thor. Thanks for beautiful pictures of beautiful knife.

Hope you didn't cut your achilles tendon.
Good looking knife. Guess you will have to keep it forever now that it has sentimental value.

would you believe i got one last year new in box for 220.00 from an auction site? i never put it in the sheath yet,its hanging on a wall with some buffalo head hangers from eknifeworks....

Coldblooded357, great intial review, looking forward to hearing your impression of the knife after some use. Also want to hear how you feel it stacks up against the Fehrman.

Bryfry, that sheath looks great re-dyed

Awesome job dying the sheath, it looks GREAT!

I agree with you about quick-release for sheaths, it's surprising to me how seldom makers seem to consider this, particularly with leather sheaths vs: Kydex. I like the "thumb break" design usually used for holsters, your thumb naturally snaps it loose as you grip the hilt, very smooth and you don't need to fumble with a snap and then readjust your grip. Unfortunately the only sheath I have with that design is for a REALLY crappy dagger that cannot be sharpened. At all. Hey, it was the 80's, daggers were in, I was young and foolish.

Look forward to a review of the Fehrman when you get it, I have been leaning towards getting one for a while.

Fallkniven and Fehrman - head to head reviews - I'm almost as excited as if I was getting them! :D

Thanks!!

Stop it, please!

Must people continue to make me regret selling my Thor in a fit of stupidity? :)

Congrats on the great knife!

Great, you got it!

Thanks for keeping us up to date.

I have kydex sheaths for both all my Fallknivens and my Fehrman. I like that setup since allows easy one handed ingress / egress. If you decide you just don't like the leather sheath, that might be an option for you. (It might weigh less too)

Keep the updates and pics coming.

Awesome knife. Actually, its one of the only knives I have ever seen and told myself right after that I MUST have it. It took me over 5 years, but I can now proudly call myself an owner of the Thor!

What's knife in bottom? That looks really, really nice!

Thats a mean cut! It's strange that you mention getting a cut like that from a drop because one of the first things I was thinking about when holding it was "Damn I had better not drop this on myself." It's the reason why I wanted a lanyard on it. I almost never want a lanyard but the weight and the sharpness combined with the perfectly strait handle made me think of it. I like the die job you did on the sheath too. Unfortunately my knife has the beginning of a scratch from the sheath too. I think its either from the rivets in the sheath or possibly bits of sand or metal that may have gotten stuck in the leather or the glue that they used to put it together. $200 - $300 for a custom sheath:eek: I'm willing to spend that on steel lol but I'm not so sure about dropping that on a piece of leather. I wonder if a trail master san mai or laredo bowie sheath would fit?

It's good to see I'm not the only one to become immediately infatuated with the Thor. It is certainly a beautiful although quite expensive blade

I noticed my Falk sheath has a thin sheet of hard plastic that touches the blade on the side that is getting scratched, Does anyone else's?

Yeah, I thought about maybe getting a cordura Trailmaster sheath, but then I realized that the blade on our Thors are 1/2" longer than a Trailmasters, though they do look very similar! Also I have a Larado Bowie and it is long enough, but the Thor is still wider.

I think someone (bearcut?) in an earlier post said they have kydex sheaths for their Falknivens. Love to know more about that!

Don't forget to take some pics of your Thor in use!

Sorry for the bump from the past, but I just can't picture this.

Can anyone explain it better or show a pic? Would love a super secure grip on my NL1 :)

Also, keen for a kydex or something else sheath if anyone can help?
