as a camping knife?
Can anyone explain to me why there are so many good bad and ugly knives on the market.

I am an analyst and this is nuts

I would like to find a reasonable priced camping survival knife in the price range of 50-70 bucks

I have looked at gerber, sog, ka bar, buck, and now fallniven.

sog ka bar and others look coool but are for fighting and not camping

gerber big rok is capable

but fallniven ... is....???/

thoughts

use will be ..

a) kinda show off
b) show son about setting traps
c) actual use which most campers will understand

any other recos are appreciated, as well as experiences if I am looking in the wrong direction

youtube far tooo complicateed

An outstanding knife.

Something nice enough to show off but useable around $50-70 bucks.....hmmm....

You mentioned SOG, they do have a lot of good fixed blades for that price range. I have a SOG Field Pup that was about $40 when I bought it at a knife show a few years ago. There's also the NorthWest Ranger from SOG.

I would say a RAT 3, but those run a little above your price range.

I think there is a Buck 119 that Wally World stocks, and a specialized version with a nice brown wood  handle that is very impressive and runs pretty low in cost. My Uncle has this version and it's very nice. I thought it was a custom shop version, but it's just an upscale 119.

Case makes a couple of really nice looking fixed blades. I'm not quite sure on the prices, but most are under $90.

I've owned a Gerber Big Rock. The blade got chipped doing normal chores. I now own a Fallkniven S1, and I absolutely love this knife.

The Fallkniven S1 is a fantastic knife, and I very highly recommend it for all the purposes mentioned.

But it's far pricier than $50-70.

In that price range, I'd look at the Benchmade Rant (Red Class, but made in the USA of 440C) - a very solid knife IMO.

(BTW, I have both knives.)

I have both knives as well. If the OP knows somewhere that you can get a real Fallkniven S1 for $70 please let me know and I'll buy a case of them!

The Rant is a good bargain, but I think the KaBar isn't a terrible choice either. The Buck Nighthawk or Buck 119 are also pretty good choices that fit in his price range.

If you (the OP) wants some interesting entertainment, go to www.knifetests.com and watch the videos where he abuses a Buck Nighthawk to the point of failure. I'm amazed such an economical knife can withstand such abuse! I would think any knife that could take that much pounding could handle normal camp chores with ease! I know some people don't put much stock in those tests, but I do think they are interesting.

I have an S1. It's a nice knife, but the handle is a bit on the tiny side.

Fallknivens are stellar knives.Top of the line fit and finish.Great users as well.I have personally carried an S1 for a few years and have no complaints about it.I've done everything from making traps to cooking steak with mine.
RAT cutlery has been mentioned.Great knives with a solid company behind them.
grohmann are great dependable knives. You can even pick how you want then.

All Fallknivens are worth their weight in gold. The S-1 is no exception. In your $50-$70 price range, a Helle or Brusletto would be a good choice. They both offer high quality steel and natural handles, and can be "shown off". A Buck Omni Hunter also comes into mind; I have the 12 Pt. version and use it as a camp knife regularly.

I've never heard anyone complain about the quality of any Fallkniven. Perhaps they weren't the right fit, but that's just poor luck more than anything else. (Such as the poster above who said the handle was too small).

Don't buy from ontario. If you are going to purchase one get an RC-3 or an RC-4 Lifetime warranty! No matter what you do to it. they can be had for around $100 Fit and finish is great!

I just got the F1, amazing knife and perfect size, I wouldn't want the extra size of the s1

funindasun13, Try the Schrade SCHF1 or SCHF3. I tell ya what. For the money they are pretty tough to beat. About $40 to $65.

You won't hear me saying anything bad about a Fallkniven, but in this price range I'm surprised nobody recommended a Becker BK-2 or BK-7.
