Hi Guys,

Does anyone have a wip of someone doing a False edge?

What angle do you normally do them at?
How high(or low) do you make them into the blade?
For looks are they meant to join up right at the tip with the blade grind?
How thick do you generally leave them if your not going to sharpen them?

Thanks for any help offered.

I do everything free hand, so I have no idea of the angle.

Sometimes I'll make the false edge meet the primary grind, other times I'll leave a bit of space between the two. Whatever looks best.

I usually leave them a little thinner than a dime, but will take them thinner on occasion.

Matt,

False edges are ground at varying angles; depending on whether the swedge is decorative or functional. If it is ground to be decorative the angles can be fairly steep, say 25 or 30 degrees per side. If the false edge is ground to function; the angle will be more flat; say 20 to 22.5 degrees per side.
A sharp false edge is done like a minny scandi grind. Its ground flat on both sides resulting in an extremely sharp edge.
Look here it may give you some ideas.

I do it free hand as well. Nick Wheeler, however, has it down to a science, and
has a WIP thread ongoing in the Custom Knife forum photo-documenting and
explaining each step.

Thanks Jonothan, Fred and Russ,

I have been follwing Nick's build for Lorien. Nicks a machine! Thanks for the tips.

Now out to the shed this weekend to give it another go!
