False Exchange Descriptions

I have noticed some knives in the exchange lately with false descriptions. Either relating to the condition, previous ownership, or the knives NIB or LNIB status. There are always threads where someone gets ripped off and wants their money back due to the condition of the knife upon arrival not matching the description. Everyone want to jump in and help right the wrong in this case however if we know a person is lying about a knife we can't post about it and prevent wrong doing before it happens. How can we combat this as a community? Currently there is a knife for sale that the seller claims is brand new and he is the first and only owner however this is not true but you can't speak up without getting an infraction. The sellers email is hidden so you can't address him directly either. The fact remains his description is false and even after being called out he merely deleted the posts and did not change the description. What is everyones opinion on matters such as this? I would almost rather receive an infraction than see one of the good people here buy a used knife advertised as brand new.

I'm the one that removed the posts not the seller. Your post it didn't indicate anything about the condition or previous ownership. It's the sellers prerogative to price their knife at what they see fit.

He was given a great deal on the knife by someone who hoped it would not be proffited on but that's neither here nor there the fact remains his description is false and even after being called out he merely deleted the posts and did not change the description. This is part of life. Nothing will ever be perfect, and there will always be people with less then the best morals and values who stretch the truth, or plain out lie.

If it's really bad, it will be reported in this section of the forum, otherwise you need to look out for yourself.

There are tools on this forum, like seller feedback. Read before you buy.
There is this section (as mentioned above)
Also, you can request more pics from the seller to confirm condition.

Best advice though, is if it just doesn't seem right, either in the description or pics, move on....

The price is irrelevant I agreed with that from the start. I also didn't post anything regarding condition and such as its not allowed which is what was stated. The thing is when someone gets it as we have seen time and time again and determines its not new everyone will certainly chime in about them deserving a refund but we can't head it off in the first place. If he could pull 3g's from it then good for him I don't have to buy it that'd not the issue. I don't see a need to claim first ownership as opposed to simply stating " Hey I'm selling my knife." Its just deceitful. Your advice is sound Jr88 and if we all follow it we will probably be okay in the majority of transactions we make. I appreciate your opinion.

How do you know it's not in the stated condition? And I guess I must be missing them but I don't see very many threads where people have issues with the condition being vastly different than described.

I don't know that the one specific knife you are talking abouts condition to be wrong unless you consider a knife changing hands no longer new which many do. I do know he is not the first owner. I changed the thread yet again I shouldn't have said a lot but when it happens you always find it here in the GBU. I got what I was looking for JR88 was spot on and. His advice to always protect yourself is the way to go.

Best way to combat bad descriptions is to buy items with corresponding pictures in the sales ad. It helps to ask for more pictures if necessary. If you sell, you need to have your email and PM's turned on, period.

I almost pulled the trigger on a knife awhile back where the seller was appearing as the original owner, but after a little research found out he was at least the third owner. Funny how people don't think about this when there are links to previous for sale ads combined with knives that have birthdate cards all with the same date. I've also seen ads edited after they sit for a few days, removing details about the knife that the seller thinks is hurting his sale. Those type things make it easy to know who not to deal with.

If I had evidence that someone was misrepresenting an item on the exchange, I would probably contact a mod directly and present the evidence.

It is often amusing isn't it. Thanks for the opinions guys and the help Rev. I don't think it hurts to be up-front about the history of a knife. I know from experience thou that Knives that have passed thru several hands often have more wear and tear than new from maker knives. Which is only important to collectors but we often see where a knife was claimed to be new yet had issues from things such as disassembly. I believe in accountability but this isn't a perfect world. Thanks all.

Please don't contact an individual mod directly. He may not be in a position to help at that time. Use the Report Post icon (the small triangle in the lower left corner of the post) which will notify the entire mod staff through our forum.

Thanks! I wasn't sure if a situation like that was report-worthy, so I hesitated to recommend that option.
