Need advice, I have an old WW2 hand made one of a kind knife that my grandfather carried and used during war, it is a family heirloom!:D

Like most of you knife nuts on this forum I have too many knives to accomplish any cutting job required, right knives for right jobs:rolleyes:;)

Here is the dilemma, my grandfather's knife could use a lot of modifications to make it better performing tool, sharpening doesn't count.
ex: re-grind, re-profile blade, modify handle, polish the blade/handle, etc.

Grandfather would have loved me to use his knife and remember him by it in doing so,
and what he has done/sacrificed during war for me to be here now!!

I WILL NEVER SELL IT!!!!

So resale value of this knife is totally irrelevant!!!

BUT I fear that by dramatically changing blade shape, handle form to make it more user friendly/efficient,
I will change the nature of this knife???:eek::confused::eek:

Unfortunately, as is it right now, it isn't very efficient or comfortable user.
That is why I very rarely use it!

It has history, my grandfather was highly decorated Air Force pilot and this knife was made for him by his plane's maintenance crew as present.
He flew with it all the way to Berlin!!!

Mod it or NOT to mod it?:confused::confused::confused::confused:

I wouldn't,,, make a nice display case for it along with a photo of your grandfather in his uniform.

Agreed.

If you really want something to use that is similar, perhaps commission a custom as a "user", that is based off of, but not identical to your grandfathers knife.

Then you can have your cake and eat it too :).

As I mentioned in OP it's dilemma!

While my grandfather would like me display it in case he also would have wanted me to use it as well!

As it is now it isn't great user:(

Making a similar or clone knife, well there wouldn't be any emotional connection to new knife, it wouldn't be my grandfather's knife!

And I already have plenty of better performing knives that I have no emotional attachment to!

I think, what I will do is just keep it in wall case with photo as suggested but also use it just to open mail and imagine my grandfather slitting nazi throats with it;)

That way I both remember and honor him at the same time!

Thank you all for your advice!

Yeah we gotta see the knife. For all we know the solution might be for you to adjust how you use it.
