family problems

15 here, they don't like it either, so i have to bribe them a lot. I cant believe i got them to let me have 2 year subscription to gold. O.O
Congrats FireAnt,things are different now days and if I had kids still in school I'd worry about them even accidentally taking a knife to school and getting in big trouble.Just remember knives are tools and designed to be just that. All that being said I think it's great to have the young knife enthusiasts here on the Forum. You're growing up in a different world than I did, just show you're folks you're a responsible person and that should calm their fears.

16...and the parents aren't too thrilled about the whole knife thing. My mother says she's worried about me when I browse through some of the photos on this site, haha...Well I use mine for my summer job mostly, so they tolerate it. As long as you don't do anything stupid with it, they'll see that you're mature enough to own one. After all, she let you get a gold membership, so I doubt she's that heavily opposed to it.

When I was very young, my dad and his dad kept me and my brother supplied with pocket knives. And watches. And pens. That's why I'm addicted to toys to this day. Really! It's their fault. :D

No such problems in my family.

Same here

I have been around guns and knives since I was very little. My grandfather was a dealer for a time, so I have had a knife of some sort since I was about 5. My mother really doesn't care, and my dad borrows my knives all of the time. They were a little apprehensive when I started buying 100$+ knives. I just reasoned with them by saying it was a hobby and I'd be spending the cash on video games if not knives, and knives will last me a lot longer. They now buy me knives or sharpeners/oil, etc. on most gift giving holidays.

Holy Balz! I never realized how many youngsters there were on this site.

Yep, and that's a good thing. I hope that this forum will educate and teach this generation that knives are tools and not to perceive them as weapons.

Ok, back to the subject. I was fortunate to grow up in south and east Texas among hunters and fishermen. It would be considered 'old school' (60's - 70's) now but knives were just as common as guns, sleeping bags, and fishing poles when I was growing up.

Hi, and welcome here on BF.
U should tell us how old are u, what kind of knife u are carrying (or wish to carry), and where. Also, I know nothing about knife laws in New Orleans. But, in general, I think that:
- u should not try to go against the law. So, for example, if law says u can't carry a knife until u are 18.....well, wait. I've carried a knife since I was a teenager but laws are different here and respecting the rules is a priority.
- u should not go against ur parents, but with them. As others suggested, let them see that u have a certain attitude towards carrying a knife, and what u use it for. This is crucial. And most of all, talk to them before u buy a knife (buy it with them eventually) and every time u need.
- even if the law allows u to carry whatever u want, knives aren't all the same, and don't evoke the same kind of feeling, especially in worried parents. I know that, in the end, what matters is not the knife but the hand that handles it and the brains that control it. Still, carrying a Peanut or SAK is very different than carrying a Rajah.
- as for any 'contrast' with ur family, time and talking will do their job. Someday u will be old enough to do what u want to. But I'm sure u have a way to show ur parents that a knife is a tool. And a useful one, too.

I am about to have the same problem with carying a gun. But seriously if you live in their house, and they are paying the bills its their rules, and you gotta follow them. Now it is not unreasonable to try to influence your parents opinion on the matter, but I would avoid confrontation.

Baddassery+Knives will get you nowhere with your parents.
If you want to be allowed to edc a knife you must first demonstrate to your parents that you can be responsible with your knives.
Ive carried some form of edged tool since i was 9. At 14 now, i edc a spyderco Gayle bradley, which granted may not be some mall ninja's fantasy folding disembowel-er, but still lands in the tactical category. My parent's have never had any particular problem with me carrying knives, but i have always excersized restraint while carrying them. I don't clean my fingernails with them, nor do i wave draw it open to open a letter. (Ok, the GB isn't waved but you get the idea.) To sum it up, you have to be moderate about what you carry, and be responsible when you do so.

I do not leave the house without Atleast one knife on me ( usually a couple more hiding in my EDC bag). I look for good quality practical folder. They also happen to be badass.
