Fanny pack... design, does it get in the way?

I am considering a small fanny/front style pack that can carry a phone, small gun if need be, keys, a couple small tools, and maybe a knife. I landscape so I am bending and twisting a great deal, often in and out of trucks. I would like the bag also for hiking, and in general an EDC bag capeable of a great deal in a small package. Is it reasonable to think I can work with this sucker strapped to my body?

I appreciate your help.

I am considering a couple small bags from Cheaper then Dirt, maybe a Maxpedition, or the TDI unit.

Thanks

I wear a couple of different packs (cheap). Both of them will hold a small handgun and other necessary gear, but they ride on the hip bones and I think that they will be getting in your way during your job. Stooping, bending, lifting and carrying would be the primary tasks affected I would think. Not something that will interfere with your job any, but it might be annoying.

I don't care much for fanny/waist packs. After a while they seem to ride down on your hips & you are always adjusting on them. just my .02 :D
I would rather have a shoulder bag or backpack.

You know what - if you look at Osprey packs - they have a belt harness and the top of the backpack turns into a fanny pack. It would carry any load you wanted.

Check out an REI type store - these would work if ANYTHING would work. My fear is the weapon would make the cheapies hang low.

One thing I will add -

If you absolutely don't want someone to know you are carrying a gun - don't wear a forward facing fanny pack, It screams gun.

If you could care less, carry-on and good luck with your search.

The lumbar pack I have (can't stand to call it a fanny pack) rides down if I have too much weight in it. I've really had to cinch it up tight to stay where it ought to until I made a strap to go over a shoulder out of webbing. I'd go for a lumbar pack with shoulder straps if I were to get another, as was mentioned above. I really don't care for the design. I just keep it in my car most often for emergencies.

The only time I wore one was when I went hunting, and it really did that well. Mainly because it had very few items in it. With any amount of wait, something that goes over the shoulder would be much better. I have a camo backback vest that I like for hunting now. It also holds more, and seems lighter, at least in my perspective.

I appreciate the input fellas! I have used the loose single compartment bags for hunting and I thought it was handy and not a big deal, but I was not working either, mostly sitting. I wondered if the smaller more tactical belt type units would be less combersome, but I fear they will not be. I can see jumping in and out of my dump and catching a toll in the gut... That will not make me a happy camper. Decisions, decisons...

A front worn fanny pack screams gun to me too, like a giant flashing billboard. A maxpedtition fatboy doesnt flash gun quite as loud, and might be more efficient. I really despise fanny packs as I think they are one of the dumber looking peices of gear ever fielded. Personal opinions aside they really do tell the world," hey I have a gun and can not efficiently get to it with one hand"

I've never used a second hand. It's faster than a shoulder holster and only slightly slower than a thumb break or security strong side holster.

A purse can only scream two things: one is.... well, you know. If you have a Maxpedition in green, black or camo, it screams gun. And gravity being what it is, you never know exactly where you purse (and gun) will be when you need it. Purses also get left places, like over a chairback.

I just don't carry purses. It's just a personnel preference, I guess.

Check out Mountain Hardwear(REI) Lumbar packs. I use the Blaze model, with the shoulder suspension setup and it works great in the woods for me. It has plenty of room for the basics. As far as "small" pistol carry it would depend on what that is. looks very utilitarian also.

Thanks for all the input.

I am not really excited about the "man purse" idea either. I do want functionality and if people think I look like a metrosexual....well they are gonna have to reach pretty hard for that one. :D

Ok, I will not carry this over the sholder... it will not work for my work. It would have to be small and tight against the belt like the TDI or the small CTD units.

Lets rule out a main pouch big enough for a gun as I can carry my .380 in a false wallet with good comfort. I want a cell pouch off of a main pouch that can hold wallet stuff, and a handful of tools. Maybe it has one other pouch as well. I will likely also have a fixed blade on my hip, and that will about fill me up.

Thanks

I could not find a pack like that on their site, but I will say that it must be of exceptional quality. That place has industrial duty campling suplies.
