FAQ on making handles?

Hi,

I just got a Becker BK9 and I'm thinking of making up some nice hardwood scales for it as an interesting woodworking project, but I don't feel like reinventing the wheel. Does anyone know of a faq or some other resource on how to make custom handles? I'm a total beginner. Tips on wood choice would be really helpful too. If it helps - I have access to only hand power tools other than a table saw (a.k.a. no lathe).
