A lot of the subforums have a sticky that is a FAQ thread.

If we had one here, what would you want new comers and lurkers to know about us, our subforum and SURVIVE! ?

I'd want a statement about how this is a positive community to discuss and learn about S! If you need to complain about wait time or availability you should call your mom or therapist (ok maybe we shouldn't actually list that last part :p).

I think it would be good to have a link to the official site and also point out the FB group and instagram as sources of information. It might be helpful to give a sense of what production is like at S! compared to other production companies as rhus seems to be a common surprise for new customers.

What do you think?

Well said , include that in the FAQ's.

Ha! We want to be welcoming, though, right? :)

I should have asked in my original post, what do you see as the most frequently asked questions?

I always see on Facebook and instagram:
What knife is that?
How can I get that knife?
When will this be available?
What is going into production next?
What steel is that?
What's the difference between steels?

Haha!

Second question...

When will Ellie reach through the computer screen and start choking me for asking about the damn hat?

This is a great idea. Personally I have been dying to know what sort of finishing it is on the new productions. All I read is "finishing" but does it mean that it is coated? DLC coating? Or is it bead blasted? It looks cool and one of the 4.1 video on YouTube has the tester put it through rigorous usage, even covered with soil after chopping through the roots of cattail plants and the finish held up great. I am honestly impressed after watching that.

That GSO abuser (;)) was our very own Chiral. There is no coating, the "finish" is peened, like a very fine bead blasting. Looks great, right?!

To be fair, I think you should explain that costs are cut in shipping/speed of manufacture rather than quality.

I mean I was mildly annoyed that it took a good month to ship an in stock knife. But I think its a case of as affordable as they are, you can have it fast, or you can have it done right. To do both would substantially raise the price.

Fast or done right, that is the compromise when Guy's standards are as high as they are. Returning customers get it.

I don't think the wait times keep cost down, though, but rather keep the quality high.

In theory you could hire more people just to assemble, handle shipping etc. But the price of the knife would skyrocket based on the quality I've seen. Personally, after seeing mine I'm willing to wait. Consider how a bear grylls gerber knife costs 50$. Wager to say most of that goes towards shipping, marketing, mass production facilities. Not a lot towards the actual knife. Whereas here, I would say 80-90% of the price of the knife goes towards man hours and materials. If that makes any sense.

It's always rough waiting for your first Survive! to show up but once you get it you understand. I was chomping at the bit when I was waiting for my first.
I think a lot of these knives still have to be sharpened even after you order them but I'm not 100% positive. Plus the whole debacle with the handles might have had an impact.
I always feel like a kid on Christmas morning when I receive one of these knives in the mail!

Often you'll see new videogame development studios ask people to prepay for the game to fund development. Often what happens, is several years past the original release estimate it no closer to being finished than years ago, but the studios are rarely held accountable, and you'll see people asking what happened to their money getting attacked for by people saying they don't understand, or they are being entitled, despite having paid for the game.

Of course that's not the case here, every bit of the money is being used as efficiently as possible. I'm just saying I can understand how someone would wonder why they have nothing to show for their hundreds of dollars a couple months down the line. Now if they're throwing a fit for not getting a preorder within a couple week or something silly, then yeah, no excuse.

That makes total sense. Sometimes I just need people to spell it out for me :p

Oh I completely agree. The wait is rough but it's worth it in the end. My anxiety was through the roof for a few weeks after I ordered the 4.7 even though I knew it would take a lot time to get things rolling. Now I'm getting all antsy after reading all of these schedule updates.

Good comparisons. I think the biggest factor in customer satisfaction, or rather understanding, is if people have followed the company and understand that Guy sharpens each blade himself and has one coworker and they do the best they can with the large demand. If someone places an order expecting service similar to a large, established company with a warehouse and many distributors, then they get pretty impatient.

So it's Chiral? Wow! That's a darn neat job he did there trying to wear the peened finishing away. Impressive!
