Far From Being Bored

I agree Rhino. My parents orchard wasn't great. But growing up in the woods and around wildlife definitely helped my appreciation for nature and all life. Now I WISH I had taken more advantage of it.

Looks like a perfect place to raise a family and enjoy your hobbies.

Thanks for sharing! Do you guys have bears there or other preditors (cougars etc.) ??

I haven't seen any signs yet, but with all the work of settling in here I haven't had a chance to get much further than my own land and surrounding fields on foot. Though yesterday in driving through some other dirt roads around me I spotted some large areas of state land open to public hunting and I am heading that way in the morning to work on a couple of projects so maybe I'll know a little more about what's in the area then. So far I have only seen deer, rabbit, squirrel, mink, turkey, hawks, skunks, raccoon, opossum, and haven't been through any good areas for tracking yet. Unfortunately the area where the stream passes through my land it has steep sides with no "beach" type areas for checking for tracks.

Wow! Outstanding pictures mistwalker. Congratulations on your new home. I really enjoy your photos.

Thanks man, and I'm glad you like them!

Looks like you will have plenty of peace and quiet living there. Nice big spaces for the little one to play and explore. I too live on a gravel road, its not that bad if your road commission grades and compacts the road often. Enjoy!

Yep, she has enjoyed exploring the area very much, watching all the wild life and playing with the frogs and huge grass hoppers. The road isn't in bad shape at all, just gets a little messy with rain.

Great pics, looks like a very nice area to live.

Hate to get personal but do someone a favor and throw out those cigarettes. They have killed over 3/4 of my family and I hate seeing others go through the pain it has caused me loosing my family to something so stupid.

Thanks man, and yeah, that is something that is already on the agenda. Lisa and I have been discussing it. It's a lot easier to think about here than it was when we were living in an area with meth labs exploding near by and thieves prowling the roads at night looking for things to steel to support their meth habit. It has been nice not sitting out on my porch locked and loaded. Lately I have been leaving them in my truck and busying myself on another area of the property. As long as I stay busy I don't think about them, and there is lots to busy myself with here that occupies both hands :)

Too bad you aren't local or you could have borrowed one or two ;)

DAMN! Now I'm seriously jealous. I would love being able to hunt without the shock of breaking the sound barrier and scaring everything in the area.

Congratulations on the great new place!

The pictures of your daughter picking apples and checking out the frog made me smile! Very cute!

Your pictures of the fresh produce and your awesome looking vegetable soup and bread have made me VERY hungry for some homemade veggie soup!

The weather here today is almost good hot soup weather -

Thanks for the pictures , and I hope you can make it to the JK Gathering!

best

Thanks man, yeah watching her playing with everything makes me smile too. Yep, same here, nice chill to the breeze, autumn is coming :). I am about to put on a another pot of soup tonight for tomorrow's supper. I hope so too man, even if I can't stay over night I'd like to pop in for a day.

Amazing land you got there, Mist. Love the projets you have planned!

Thanks man, and yep lots of projects planned. I have a couple of barns and out buildings to build, and fencing to put up, a new fire pit area to build, and I need to find a source of clay to build a clay oven outside or I may end up making it from stone if I can't find clay.

Congrats on the new home and land Mist. Looks like lots of fun projects. You could start doing some taxidermy in the new shop once you get your suppressor. ;)

Great pics!

Thanks man! Lol, the shop is a photo and prototype work shop :)

Looks like an awesome piece of property! A lot of amish here in WI too. I'm certainly jealous of the trout stream and have my eyes open for some property around here with one. Sometimes they pop ip but never with a home, guess I'll jave to learn to build.
What kind of apples?

The Amish look to be a good resource for learning from when it comes to living off the grid, I have been talking to a few who own shops in the area. I have much enjoyed the conversations. I love having the stream. Not sure on the apples, I'll post better pics of some later and you can maybe tell me. I am going out to pick some with the little one in a bit.

Nice place man, really nice.

Thanks man, really liking being back out in the country again.

That's really cool, Congrats! :) Good luck with your projects. Thanks for sharing this with us.

Thanks man, glad you liked the post!

Great Pictures, I can tell your cute little daughter is loving the new place with all of the fresh food and wildlife.
I grew up in a similar setting of fruit trees and animals. I think it helps give kids a respect and appreciation of nature.

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks man, I think so too. I have taken her to the woods with me since before she was able to walk. She loves all animals and reminds me a lot of Elly May Clampett lol

I think so too. Much rather raise a child in the country than in a city any day! I know, I need to do a lot of research before I start pruning on them., But they are in desparate need of pruning.

LOL, really cool dog man! One thing I want to do is fence in the yard and get a couple of dogs. Some people drive reeeeeally fast down this road...like hitting 80, so I am going to fence in the actual yard so I can keep them safe.

Looks like an awesome homestead mist, good luck!
Vance- awesome dog

Thanks man!

congrats on your knew home Mist. thanks for sharing.

Wow, that's quite a move, TN to MI. I bet you HAVE been busy. You have a beautiful place to live with the family, thanks for sharing. We have come up to Lake Michigan the past few years to camp and Michigan is obviously very proud of their public parks. It shows!

Btw, does the new home have wood heat? I couldn't quite tell from the pics. With being darter up north, winter will be different. Fwiw, I put in a wood fireplace with a blower in our home several years ago and LOVE IT! I don't mind collecting and splitting wood throughout the year (another great reason to be outside ;) ) and it has cut our heating costs by 2/3s. What I installed was VERY easy and inexpensive. As you know, there is something wonderful about the warmth and crackle of a fire on a cold day.....

That place looks like heaven. I wish I was there right now.

OMG Busier than a three-balled tom cat! Yes they are very proud of their public parks. I love being out of the city and in a place where litter on the roads is practically non existent. Nope, not yet, for now we have a gas furnace and a gas heater in the living room for if the power goes out. I will get to the wood heat next year, I have already been studying how I am going to approach it. Yes, I love wood heat, we had multiple fire places in my childhood.

That place looks like heaven. I wish I was there right now.

It is beautiful here, you should come for a visit next year :)

Looks like a great place. Thanks for sharing Mist!

Thanks, really liking it so far!

Congrats on the new home. Looks like a great place and thank you for sharing.

Thanks man, loving watching the daughter explore the place and curious what winter will be like. This is the first time I have been above the Mason Dixon Line in thirty years. Last time it nearly killed me, but I was on foot and living off the land, looking forward to seeing from the perspective of having a warm home for sanctuary :)

That is a beautiful boxer. I really miss mine. My parents took her in when I got married and my wife and I couldn't have pets where we lived. We have our own home now, but my parents are very attached to her. I still get to see my dog, but she is a wonderful companion and protector for my aging parents. She is in a good home.

If you are thinking about putting in a wood stove some kind of mass and crooked chimney can make life easier. No waking up and loading it at night for instance. The house I grew up in had a fireplace built into cement stairs with the chimney up through the middle. If we had a fire the stairs would stay warm for a day or two. Heaven on your feet in the morning. I think they are called russian masonry stoves usually.

I know what you mean, but that will have to wait till we actually build the house we want. No upstairs here, and not that much room to spare really. When I built my brother's house I designed the fire place for his den and office in the down stairs. He had always loved the fire places at Cracker Barrel restaurants, so since the room was 26' x 46' feet I went just a hair bigger. His fire place is 6 feet wide, 4 feet deep, and 3.5 feet high at the shop of the elliptical arch. The wall around it is all mountain stone, with a slate mantle, and large stone hearth. Whenever he has a fire for a day in it the wall radiates heat for a while afterward.

Looks peaceful, room to have fun and be outdoors. Congrats.

Thanks. Very peaceful so far, and lots of room for fun and projects.

I had to look up what the Mason Dixon Line is. Quite an interesting history.

Having a place to explore is a child's dream! I am sure she is enjoying it.

Yep, in other words the first time I have been out of "Dixie" since I was 17, and I just turned 48. I wanted my daughter to have the same types of fun in her childhood that I had in mine, but that was just not going to happen where I was living.
