Farewell to knife collecting

Does the OP want the knife, or the bragging rights that go with ownership of the knife?
If it is the knife itself, wait.
The masses will move on to another maker, another model, another fad...

If it's bragging rights on the hot ticket... well... ya gotta pay to play.

There's another forum for knife enthusiasts that deal in stuff like this. Generally, the members their are in another strata of wealth and are capable of indulgence without a second thought. A $26k Rexford? Pshaw, lemme go get the money out of the hotel room safe.

One must accept that they will likely never be able to do that.

For the collectors that are stepping out and dying off new ones are stepping up and in

I was just on a job site meeting where a young (to me) Medical Professional commented on the Jon Gray folder being carried horizontally on my belt in a Paul Long Shark skin horizontal lifter style sheath

He said that's a nice knife

I handed it to him and asked .....you into knives ?

He replied...yes just getting started

I said what are you buying ?

His reply was

What ever I like :)

On another note

I wear suits or at least slacks and a dress shirt most days. I have found that I an openly wearing my knives eitherba folder in a horizontal belt sheath or a NYS on my belt in the same position (in front of my left hip) and people never say anything negative. They either ignore it or ask can I see it and are very interested in what it is

This is in and out of a Proffesional setting and even my kids school

Open carry and interest in knives I believe is growing not going the other way ..... that's what I'm telling myself anyway :)

I use the knives I buy so I understand your pain.
I am a user and not a collector so when there is something I really like it does get frustrating.
It's the same with classic cars . It breaks my heart knowing how many behind the glass never used ones are out there .
Like you it's not a money thing but what can you do

Hey guys,
Thank you for all the input. For some reason there are two threads. One here and one in the General category. I have no idea how that happened, but I'm shore is was my fault :). That is why I haven't commented. I've be commenting in the other thread.

Anyway...yes, it been interesting time shrinking the collection. It's been a little liberating. I've kept a few and will use them like crazy.

As the previous poster asked, I do want the Grimsmo pieces to actually use them. I really like the esthetics and, to be honest at this point, if I were to get my hands on them, I imagine I would sell the rest and really put them to the test.

I don't plan to leave the hobby. Just step back.

I would like to go to Blade. I planned on going this year, but my oldest son got sick (priorities, you know:) ). The only reason I was going was to try to get the Grimsmo pieces. But once I spoke with. John Grimsmo (through email) he mentioned that they would be doing lotteries this year, so I could end up going and not get anything. I was still going to go anyway and have fun, them needed to stay home in the end.

I agree with this 100%. Knives in general are very popular these days, custom knives in particular

Have a CPK EDC, (usually) on my belt about 70% of the time at work, and while I don't give a f*** what anyone thinks about it, few people seem to notice or care. I never carry a weapon, though

Wrt bubbles- various aspects of any commodity based economy are going to be subject to bubbling- the hotter the 'stew', the shorter the lifespan of the bubble, (and the greater the chance of getting burned). At least that's the way I see it, therefore my approach to this industry/hobby/community/business is set to a nice, low simmer. Easier, for me, over the long term to manage lots of little bubbles than fewer, hotter, bigger ones

This all comes to an interesting point (damn puns in knife forums).

I would not use a 2,000.00 folder/handmade fixed blade for any reason when a 100.00 folder/fixed will do the same work. potential loss of a beautiful knife is not worth it to me.

BUT... I would use a 5,000.00 kitchen knife till I wore it to a nub.
Perhaps it is the WAY an individual looks at what they have in hand.

To ME a rock sliver can cut cardboard, and I feel no joy in cutting said board with an expensive knife. Just ME!
However, I would feel the love in slicing tomato-s or even a sandwich with a fine Japanese, hand made blade.

It seems to be more of a eye of the beholder type thing than anything else.

Damn, trying to quote on my phone is a real hard thing to do.

Basically what you said is the whole point.

One thing....if you USE a $2,000.00 folder correctly, you should never lose it. Be aware of where you are going, what you are going to do and make sure the knife is a good candidate for carry/use in that environment. When you get home, put your knife away. It becomes.....not a problem.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Hehehehehe....I do both.

I've only lost one folder in the entire time I've been carrying/collecting...a Brad Zinker being used to open shipment in dry storage...got called away and just wasn't there when I remembered it (trust everyone but brand your cattle :D ).

However, had a cook walk out with my entire knife roll while in staff meeting, beautiful Italian pieces just back from a trip to Italy ('unfortunately' the SOB died of a drug overdose some time later...never did get my knives back though)

This is what is called the price of admission, just gotta roll with it.

Or use cheap knives :D

YMMV

Personally, I carry "Knife Lot" junkers at work but in the evenings, and weekends my babies get to roll with me.

Collecting is a great new hobby to me, and already I completely understand the dilemma of the OP.
