Farrier rasps?

I've done some searching, and found that Nicholson recommends treating their rasps like 1095. Other than that, any advice for making a rasp knife? Any problems with the rasp teeth causing stress risers? I have a guy whose grandpa was a farrier that wants 3 knives from his grandpa's rasps. With the sentiment involved, I want to get them right.

Nope, think you're on the right track. If you grind (annealed or not...I would suggest annealing) make sure you normalize them prior to HT to prevent any other issues.

mykulmorris specializes in file knives and can probably give you some pointers on working with farrier rasps. As far as I know, he makes almost 100% of his knives from files, so he'd be the man to ask about how to treat a certain brand/model of file.

Maybe he'll weigh in - not to put you on the spot or anything mykul...:p:p

Take care,
Brook

only problem i could fosee is that some rasps and files are case hardened, i got an old nicholson? farriers rasp that wouldn't harden so i can only assume that it is case hardened.
