This skinner is forged from an old farriers rasp. Some of these rasps are made of case hardened steel and only have a thin skin of high carbon steel rendering them poor choices for a blade. To make sure this rasp wasn't one of the rat tail was brought to a non-magnetic critical temperature and quenched then it was bend it in a vice and it broke like glass showing the steel a high carbon and would made an excellent knife. The rasp was cut into two pieces one large and the other small. The skinner seen in the photo was fully forged from the short section, tang and all then heat treated to a hardness of about 60 Rc. Black walnut burl scales was selected for the handle and with black spacers bolted and epoxied to the full tang. The knife features a 1/4 inch brass line lanyard hole

Awesome skinner, love the rasp pattern. So if this is the short piece, what are you planning with the larger piece? :D

Hello Guys and thanks. The large section I forged in a full tang Nessmuk with a blade a little longer than 5 inches with the same flat grind and the overall is 10 inches. The blade is heat treated but still need more tender loving care before it is ready to be a knife
